Text column says 1 but it is 2

Hi, I'm working on someone else's mechanical and have an issue I've never seen before.

The text columns say "1" but the copy flows into 2 columns.

when I put "2" into the text column tool, then I get 4 columns.

I'm really frustrated. I want ONE column of type, and can't figure out why it's locked.

Any ideas?

Go to Paragraph palette (CTRL+Alt+T) open palette menu (top right corner) and use Span Column Command.. Be sure you see Paragraph Layout: Single Column. Maybe your text is divided to columns via this option?

That was it, the "span column" trick worked. Thanks!

My best guess is that the page has two side-by-side text boxes with one column each.

Like this example (I have added a blue stroke to the threaded text boxes to better illustrate.)
