text invisibles that don't hide

Anyone have an idea what these gray, cyan and magenta brackets are around this text?

They do not hide when text invisibles are hidden.
They do, however, disappear when in Preview mode.

I thought maybe they had something to do with tracking changes or something interactive, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

They look like InDesign's XML brackets.

I suspect that's because they are. 🙂

Yes, that's what they are. Something I don't use so I didn't recognize.

Thanks for solving that mystery.

Cheers!
