Text pasted from one InDesign file to another gets pasted as an image

Hello,

I'm experciencing something weird with indesign as of today. When I  copy+paste a text or lines from one indesign file to another it gets pasted as an image. How do I stop this from happening? I hope someone knows how to fix this, because it is really annoying!

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards,

Marlissa

Hi Marlissa,

did you select the text box or did you select the text?

Here a workaround :

Open the file where you want to put the copy in a second layout window.

Drag the selected text frame to the other window. that way the clipboard is not involved.

I selected the lines copied it and did ctrl + v in the new file. As for the text I tried both ways; selecting the box and the text into the box! Same result, it gets placed into the new file as image.

I'll try your work around, but is it a setting or an update/bug that is causing this? I've copy-pasted like this for about 4 years and never had this before.

Hi Missa,

Thanks for reaching out. As per your query, when you copy-paste a text from one file to another in InDesign, it gets pasted as an image. That's definitely shouldn't be happening. I would request if you can share a few more details:

  • OS (Exact version of Windows/MAC)
  • Version of InDesign
  • Where the files are saved(Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System /External HDD)?
  • Is the issue related to a specific document? If yes, can you please share the document with us?

You can also try the following these steps and share if that helps:

Please note resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings and InDesign will launch with default settings. You can also take a backup of the folders in case you want to. Location is mentioned in the article.

Regards,

Srishti

Hi Marlissa,

are both documents opened with the exact same version of InDesign?

You'll get the result you are currently seeing if you copy a text frame from e.g. InDesign CC 2019 to a document that is opened with CC 2017.

Regards,
Uwe

I had the same issue it is only happening in the BETA version so I am hopeing that isn't how the adobe engeneers are moving forward because that will cause designers to go nuts such a waste of time reformating each time. Open you dos in the regular indesign not beta

Hi @annetteS,

Thanks for sharing your experience! If this issue is only happening in the BETA version of InDesign, it’s likely due to a temporary change or an experimental feature being tested. I’d recommend opening your documents in the regular (non-beta) version of InDesign and confirm if the issue persists there.

Also, could you share the exact version of InDesign you’re using (both BETA and regular) and the details of your operating system? Looking forward to your update!
