Text Sentences: One per Page

Hi everybody,

I was wondering if there is a practical way of achieving the following:

I have a couple of sentences, epilogues, and I want to distribute these sentences along pages, one text-frame per page, one sentence per text frame.

Suppose I have 55 pages, each containing 1 photo.

And I have my 55 epilogues written in notepad, excel, word, w/e. Each sentence on a different line.

I now want distribute these sentences along my 55 pages. Sentence 1 goes to page 1 and so on.

Is this doable? I feel like maybe it can be done without scripting, it is a pretty basic operation.

Thanks for any insight,

Shynn

Hi guys, thanks for the suggestions. I tried data merge it and works okayish...

The bad thing thing about data marge is that each time I add new records to my excel file, I need to create a new data merged document, which I can't do as it would erase the work I have been doing on the previous data merged document....

Isn't it possible to data merge on the current document?

Supposes I have 5 text sentences and 5 photos. I run data merge. Everything great. I change some colors here and there and write some stuff.

The next day I add 1 extra text and 1 extra photo to my linked excel. This requires me to run data merge again... All previous changes are now lost as it is a new document.... How to deal with this?

Thanks in advance.

If this is still an issue, can I suggest an alternative?

How about using a master Text frame?

This way, just place the text in page 1, and the text will organically flow from page to page. Just make sure you apply something to control the sentence splitting between each frame. Maybe a HUGE paragraph space after value.

I've done something similar in the past quite successfully. No need for Data Merge.

Hi,

I like the idea of using the primary text frame on the master page. With this you can have the text frame on page 1 of the document place the text file. Apply a paragraph style that has start paragraph set for next frame (or next page) and the work is done for you.

If all the pages are designed the same way. How about creating a document with a single page having an image frame and a textframe. Create a csv with two columns one containing data on the images to be placed and the other column contains the lines of text. Then using data merge you can pull in the data into the document and create a multipage document with one image and one line text in each page.

Hi, getting back to you a bit late. Thank you for the tip. I wonder, does this requires me to link every individual text frame to an excel cell, one by one? Or does Indesign is smart enough to cycle through the csv file, automatically matching the next cell onto the next page of the document?

You would have to link just one textframe with the csv column that contains the text you want to be placed and one picture frame on the csv column that contains the path to the images. Once this is setup, doing a data merge will merge the records from the csv into your document automatically. Did you go through the link i shared before, it will give you a better idea on whether this will work for you or not.
