Question

Text styling changes when opening style editor in InDesign 18.4?

I have a document where, when I select a text frame and open the style editor, the text changes to small caps.

The style editor shows no settings to this effect, though.

If I export the IDML, I see that the applied character style and character style range attributes for the text both include the attribute Capitalization="CapToSmallCap".

This happens for me on 18.4; I had an associate try 18.2.1 and they do not see this behavior.

Is this a known issue?

Hi @John237364609b20,

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We understand the frustration caused by unexpected changes in text formatting. We would love to investigate the issue further.

  • Could you please share your operating system details so that we can try replicating the behavior on our end?
  • Is it happening with this specific document or all files?
  • Please also review the character styles and paragraph styles applied to the text frame, which might have caused conflicts.

We will try our best to help.

Thanks,

Harshika

Thanks!  I've rolled back to both 18.3 and 18.2.1 and I see the behavior (select TF, open style editor, text goes to small cap) in all versions.  As far as I can tell, both

I've not seen any other files that behave in this manner.

It looks like the characters are effectively styled with "OT small caps" via the applied style definition, but InDesign is initially displaying the text using normal (mixed-case) styling instead of the small caps.

We're all running on MacOS.

Unfortunately I cannot share the file. Since this is the only time we've seen the issue; we can work around it by removing the small cap styling.  If we run into issues with other documents, then I'll look into getting a sharable example.

Thank you for your prompt help!

Sure. Please feel free to update the discussion if you experience the same issue with other documents. We will be happy to investigate further.

Thanks,

Harshika
