Question

Text variable – Image name for anchored link in InDesign

Hi,

I'm compiling a rather large catalog of about 2000 InDesign files (as linked images), which will need to be easily editable and maintained as a print-ready document.

The best solution I've come up with is to place my links as anchored images within a text frame so that I can control their spacing with Paragraph Styles, and also so that if I need to delete or add links, it can shuffle itself easily.

I was also hoping to be able to add variable "Image Name" text frames within the main frame, so that each anchored image link name will appear automatically below for easy reference.

The problem I'm facing is that text variables don't seem to work with anchored images. Hoping there's a workaround but I can't seem to figure one out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

Hi CIA_design ,

cromski  is using anchored graphic frames that hold the placed InDesign pages.

The caption feature would not work with that. No wonder because that could imply grouping of graphic frame and caption text frame.

What cromski should have done from the start with the 2000 placed InDesign pages:

1. Set dynamic captions.

2. Group the text frame holding the dynamic caption with the graphic frame holding the InDesign page.

3. Anchor the group.

If one frame is done like that the dynamic caption will update automatically.

The anchor character of that group could be duplicated 2000 times.

In the end that could mean relinking of 2000 InDesign pages again through the Links panel.

Uwe

And a script could help with that of course.

But I think there is no script available that will do this out of the box.

So it will be a custom made script that will cost some money.
