Things going outside the text box it is placed in

Morning all,

Hoping someone can help please.

I have a text box and then placed items in that text box such as images, other text boxes etc. The text box everything is contained in has a stroke. However, when items within the text box grow, they are growing out of the text box. This is an issue as I want the text box to have a stroke and so the contents are over lapping this. I have everything set to grow, so why isn't my container text box growing with its content so that everything remains inside it?

Any help would be great please!!!

With a lot of fiddling I think I have sorted it. I have taken the description out of a text box and just in the main text box. This seems to allow everything to flow with it and not over lapping the text box!

This does mean I still am a bit stuck if I ever need to put the text in a separate box as it seems it won't read to move down if the box grows; only actual text. However, that is for another day. I could not have figured it out without you so thank you for taking the time and effort to help me!

Redesigning the look is a great idea. If you want to keep what you have, here is a specific workflow, pasting each frame as a inline object, each in their own paragraph and those paragraphs have the leading (line spacing) set to auto so that the frame expands to accomodate them.

Good morning,

I hope you had a nice weekend.

Thank you very much for making that for me. I really appreciate it. Unfortunatley, I must be doing something wrong as the image and below items won't move down as the title grows. Therefore, the below is happening. I have made everything inline so as it doesn't anchore with the title it isn't moving. The price is obviously anchored to the title and is thus moving with it but then of course it is overlapping the text box

I don't use auto-size frames in my work, but I can think of a possibility. Do you have text wrap set on the anchored objects to force text below to move down in the main frame?

hmmmm... I don't think setting their text frame would help. As they are all anchored to the top description so they all move down accordingly. They work perfectly it is just that they are jumping out the text box once anchored. That means one the text box with the stroke is hidden under them and also they don't stay within the margins of the page

Maybe the solution is to have a more "efficient" design.

Hi @Helen25214903tykj:

That's the Direct Selection tool (not the Selection tool) but it exposes the clues we need. I placed a partially transparent box over the text frame that contains the main content, and the anchored frame.

The other content is in its own frames underneath. You can see the outport in the third column—it's overset—contrasting with empty outport on the main frame, above it.

If the goal is to add content and have the main frame resize down, all of the content has to be inside the main frame.

Hi Barb,

Ok thank you feel like we are getting somewhere!.

Only issue is... when putting the code and available at text boxes... I went into the main text box so there was a type blinker and pasted it in. So it should be in there. Then I anchored them to the description box at the top. Then this seams to make it just out? Then image isnt in the main box either when I anchor as this also is over lapping. But I paste it into the main text box? But as soon as it anchors it is as if it jumps out the text box?

So how do I make the items stay in the text box even when they are anchored?

I think this is the issue as if i unanchor them then the issue is fixed. but... then they dont move down with the description and then there is a whole new issue. So how can I make the main text box move down around anchored objects?

Thank you again I appreciate the help

Hi @Helen25214903tykj:

Hopefully Derek's explanation has resolved this for you. If so, please let us know so that we (or you) can mark his answer as correct.

If you still have a question, it would be very helpful if you would re-post the same screenshot with View > Show Hidden Characters enabled, View > Extras > Show Text Threads enabled, choose the Selection tool (first tool in the toolbox), and then Edit > Select All.

Maybe posting a screen shot will help in unpick what's going on.

So, as you can see the, at the bottom of the image there are some products where the description at the top of the box is only 2 lines long. Everything moves down but doesn't grow out the stroked text box.

Then things that have a 3 line description or a table, this grows and moves down but over lapping the text box it is all placed in. I am not sure why it is allowed to do that and the text box isn't growing around them. The text box containing everything is set to grow. Thank you in advance!

Have you set up your text frames using the: Text Frame Options > Auto-size > Height Only?
