TOC for a book with separate chapter documents

Question

Hi, I have made interior layout design of a book. The book has been split into several documents as chapters. It's not in one continuous idd document. Now I would like to make a Table of Contents for the whole book. How do I go about it please? Anyone?

One more thing that catches me up from time to time – there is a check box that you need to enable to Include Book Documents. Once in a while, that gets turned off for me, and I wonder what's going on. Click the More Options button to see it, it will be visible where I'm pointing at the Fewer Options button.

Have you tried to start InDesign, File > New > Book (from the menu, even at the Start Page)

then follow instructions from Create book files with Adobe InDesign

The TOC is built from detecting the formatting of your Chapters, headings, titles... using Paragrpah styles, which means the styles have to have the same name and use in each of the Indd files.

Once all your files are 'bound' into a book, you can synchronise page numbering and create a TOC.
