Transparent fill

Hi All,

I want to make a fill that is transparent - ie not showing the object behind it but making the shape of the object in front show transparent all the way through. Ie text on a coloured box behind it, if i set it to white then it looks transprent as it shows the colour of the artboard (white) but when I export it the text is white, not transparent. If I make the text transparent it shows the colour of the box behind it. How do I make it show transparent? So if I export it as a PDF and place that onto another document, where the text is it would show through to the object in the background. Example image below (blue background added just to show up the areas I want as transparent - the white text and the two circles showing white want to be transparent so when I export and place on some image, the image will show through where the text and circles are instead of white.

Hi Tony,

if your text "Prmary School" is done in its own text frame this is doable with the Effects panel.

There is another way that will allow you to keep the text live.

Set your text to black, with 0% opacity. - Group the text and the black box, then set the Group to Knockout Group.

If I understand correctly, you want something to show through the white type when your PDF is placed into another file? If so then there are several ways to do that. Select the text box containing the white type and go to Type> Create Outlines. Select the background shape and Shift+ select the outlined type (both are selected) go to Object> Pathfinder> Subtract. The outlined white type will be used to "cut" the type out of the background shape. The other method is to use Object> Path> Make compound path.

When placing the PDF into another InDesign file, be sure to select the place option- Transparent background.
