I pay for a student account for the adobe suite and I am trying to add Helvetica type for an Adobe InDesign assignment. How come I can't find Helvetica?

If Helvetica is not installed on your computer you can install it via "Find More" [Fonts].

My suggestion would be to look for Helvetica Neue or Helvetica Now.

And just to clarify, Helvetica isn't included in our Creative Cloud subscriptions so it won't be available to activate on fonts.adobe.com.. You can purchase it, or one of the variations that Mike mentioned. Arial is fairly similar though, and you likely already have it installed.
I'd be surprised if your instructor included the requirement to use Helvetica in a class assignment, because it does require you purchase it to use it legally.

Just to add to all the excellent advice so far from @Barb Binder @Mike Witherell @Derek Cross
Fonts are a type of software, and all software come with EULA (end user license agreement) - some are free and available for commercial work - some are free and not available for commercial (personal use only).
In most cases you need to 'purchase' a font, whether that's $0 or $100 or $1000 means you are agreeing to the EULA.
Some fonts even have a clause that it might have additional costs depending on the digital distribution or print quantities.
Always check the font's EULA for any additional nuances is important for ensuring proper use.
