Turn off text inside name tabs Indesign [GPU Preview] without turning off GPU?

The question in the subject should say it all.  I want to turn off the text  [GPU Preview] which is added behind the name of the file in the tabs above. It takes up screen space for no reason.  I can't find any answers except to just turn off GPU.  Which so far I find has no difference.  2020 Macbook pro 13 with Monteray.

The subject says nothing. Honestly, I have no idea what you're referring to. Perhaps a screenshot or two?

The tabs for each file that is open has text for the names and adds [GPU Preview] text to the name which if you have several files open, takes up space.  I just turned off GPU and everything seems as fast even though InDesign can beachball often.

I see it but it's never bothered me. I don't have huge display—only a 14" MacBook Pro—and it's really not a big deal.

Here are 4 tabs and it only takes up about 55% of the width of my screen:

Rarely do I have more than 4 files open at a time. If it bothers you, turn off the GPU:

Thanks Steve and Bob.  Yes, I just turned off GPU and it seems the same speed even though my files are pretty intense.  I have several things going on at a time and any space saving is key. I have 3 monitors going. My 2010 iMac 27 and a 24 inch 1200 dpi deep as my main monitor. The laptop sits there not doing much. I did hook up the ipad just to try it so had 4 montitors.  What I really want is two 34 or larger high res monitors so I can have several more tools open at a time.  I have links and layers panels over on another monitor and it makes it easy to work fast. I worked with a 9 inch 512k Macintosh for many years and I thought this set up would be heaven. There is NEVER enough space. Once I bought a large monitor while still working in OS9 and the fastest mouse setting still meant I had to lift up the mouse to move it across the screen. I returned the $1400 screen.  This was about 2003? Fun stuff. Thanks again.

You could even make a keyboard shortcut, to turn off the GPU in Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts, when you need to:

I understand your issue instantly, no screenshots needed. I would like to know how to remove this seemingly pointless fearture. Other people being happy with it being there isn't relevant to fixing this issue, which is especially problematic when working with books (so sometimes more than a dozen tabs open) and on smaller screens. I've only seen this issue occur on Mac. I don't see why it can't be an option in the Preferences > GPU Performance - a tick box toggle to remove [GPU preview] from document tabs.

Hey @Alex_Gibson,

I totally get where you're coming from! It can be a bit inconvenient with all those tabs open and the extra [GPU Preview] text taking up space.

Right now, there’s no way to remove it without turning off GPU, unfortunately. But, if you could raise it as a feature request on UserVoice, that’d be awesome! Here's the link: [UserVoice link]. If other folks feel the same, they can upvote it and it’ll get more attention from the product team.

Drop the link here when you’ve got it up, and I’ll help spread the word!

Best,
Abhishek
