One big problem with following this advice is the way InDesign deals with cross-references in books. They point absolutely to a document, so if you rename any documents in the book you have to manually redirect the cross-references. In some books this can be quite a big task, and is error prone. You would think that InDesign could deal with this, but despite asking for the way cross-references are handled to be improved for years Adobe show no signs of listening.

I understand your issue instantly, no screenshots needed. I would like to know how to remove this seemingly pointless fearture. Other people being happy with it being there isn't relevant to fixing this issue, which is especially problematic when working with books (so sometimes more than a dozen tabs open) and on smaller screens. I've only seen this issue occur on Mac. I don't see why it can't be an option in the Preferences > GPU Performance - a tick box toggle to remove [GPU preview] from document tabs.

Yes - it is all files. Even newly created empty documents. But I am trying to work on two books with approaching deadlines, lots of images and plenty to do. This is now a serious problem.

Can you please explain what you mean by 'send samples to Adobe support' ? Samples of what, exactly, and how do we send them?

I have the same issue. Trashing preferences did not resolve it. Indesign isn't just slow - it is impossible to use for minutes at a time. If I dare to open the Control Panel (which I use all the time normally) I can forget about working for minutes. Then having closed it again - something which doesn't happen instantly - it involves a long wait. The spinning wheel of doom continues to appear even when Indesign isn't frozen, as if something 'extra' is happening in the background with every click of the mouse, even when doing something very simple e.g. selecting a frame. This is a new installation of the latest version of CC 15.1.1 x64 On a new Windows 10 machine which was a big upgrade from my previous one, which was starting to struggle with other CC apps. I've already disabled Font Preview.

Follow-up: replacing McAfee (with Sophos) made no difference. But on another thread I read that closing the 'Control Panel' might help with performance issues. So Control+Alt+6 to close the control panel and hey presto, normal functionality appears to resume. This is not ideal, because the CP is quite useful, but a temporary workaround. Now, Adobe - sort it out!

Could this be a software conflict - related to antivirus or something? Adobe clearly don't care. I recently bought a new Windows 10 machine which came pre-installed with McAfee, which I've not used for years because of conflict problems I've had in the past. I now seem to have various Indesign CC problems... considering uninstallinng McAfee as a troubleshooting step. But there might be other candidates for this game - any thoughts?

Why are you linking to 5 year old advice which isn't valid for the current version of any of your programs? And why has someone at Adobe marked that incorrect/non-working advice as 'Correct Answer'. It certainly isn't. Very poor show Adobe.

Your link provides advice for fixing this issue in Indesign CC 2015. But the folder structure is different in more recent versions.

Do any of the people having trouble with this also use a password manager and browser plug in, like LastPass?

I have this same problem and it drives me crazy - just can't figure out why it is happening. Often occurs with documents in a book. I save each one: sometimes using Save All and sometimes individually using Save As. With an affected book within seconds of saving everything several (but not usually all) of the documents are unsaved - asterisks appear next to the filename. Always assumed it was a bug because it doesn't affect every book. Although I have a feeling it affects ones which display other signs of being corrupted somehow. It happened today in a book which I had saved as IDML and then recreated.
