Typing X-Bar in InDesign and Missing Endnotes

I have not used InDesign for six months. I have come back to it using a new Mac running Monterey 12.4. My old 2014 27" iMac was running Big Sur. I am now using InDesign 17.3. My old iMac was handling InDesign well until it died.

I am editing a chapter from an Open Educational Resource I use in my Statistics classes. I have two basic questions for the chapter I am presently editing. I am certain that I will have the same issues in the five other chapters I hope to update in the next few weeks.

Question 1:

How do I create the X-Bar symbol for the Sample Mean. The symbol is a capital X with a horizontal line over it. With my old Mac, the symbol appeared properly. I creating this X with a diacritical mark in Word for Windows back in 2019 and copied into Word on my Macs. I have other statistical symbols that I use: Y-Bar, d-bar, p-hat, etc.

Question 2:

When I import my MS Word file, I lose the last page with endnotes 16 through 23. How do I get these Endnotes? InDesign is also missing the last page. I know how to add a page at the end of the document, but I do not see that red plus sign to add the missing endnotes. What am I doing wrong.

Thanks,

Ed

Hey, how are you

It's tough to know without seeing the Word file - and what's happening when you copy and paste.

Have you tried using File>Place and choose the Word file - there''s an option to Show Options and you should a few options to include End notes etc.

As for the other characters - it might be font dependent. Can you verify if you have the exact same font and versions?

Was this done with Arial Unicode MS font?

If so - you'll need to ensure that font is available in InDesign.

Sorry to have take so long to respond. Sadly I am not able to attach a Word file with symbol for the Sample Mean. Although I am a Mac users, I had to create the X-Bar symbol using the Windows version of Word. This symbol did work in InDesign when I used my old iMac. It no longer work on a Mac Studio running Monterey.

Here is the image of my Word file. Not the X-Bar symbol in the third line. The word file uses the Cambria font, which is properly installed in InDesign.
