Question

Unable to find original graphics to relink

A member of our team left without transferring all of his graphics to our shared drive.

I am updating his InDesign work, but cannot relink the graphics as I am unable to find the originals.

I don't really want to have to re-create all of the graphics.....what else can I do?

Thanks all for your NOT very helpful answers!

I know the information is in the Links panel...

I know exactly the file path where the graphics are stored on his old PC...

I know they should all be stored in a central location...

But as I said in my original post: "A member of our team left without transferring all of his graphics to our shared drive".

Now if I had access to his old PC; that would be MAGIC!!

If a member of your team

Left with the original images you are out of luck and it is not your fault.

Yes you will have to figure out and re link images that look similar to his

images. You can match it

Since you have a low res proxy.

We are a team of volunteers that trying to do the best and help!

The Links Info panel will give you the file path to the Missing link, so you can get the file path of the asset when its Status was last OK. The path will at least tell you what volume the asset originally resided on

You need to find the files. It is not magic ! you need to remember or contact the team and make sure you have it!

And when your project is done make sure you package it! and store it in a safe place...

its a good habit, in my opinion, to package files and move that folder from location to location so everything is together all the time and avoid situations like this.

Relinking isn't an administrative detail, and the information isn't somewhere else. When you have a linked graphic, the press info you need is ONLY in that linked graphic. InDesign - using stuff in the INDD file - shows a low quality preview only useful on screen, but no good for Press.

If you have press-quality pdfs of the work, you can use Photoshop to extract the images from the PDF, and then relink them to the InDesign document. If not, your only recourse is to ask the (previous) team member for the missing files, or recreate them.

Then you’ll need to find them. There’s nothing magical about it.

Have you tried to contact that former team member?
