Unable to select a heading in a paragraph style

I do not know why, but I cannot select a header in a paragraph style. The paragraph style designates the word "caution" to appear with two warning signs (glyphs) next to it. I cannot change the font of "caution" instead, anything directly after "caution" is affected, but not caution, because I cannot select the word. I have even tried creating a new style and using other styles, but i cannot select the word that brings attention to the article (e.g. "warning"). can anyone help? i have been at this for far longer than I should be.

Screen shots would help but it sounds like maybe it has been defined as a bulleted list and the bullet is a custom font for the caution symbol/text? Totally guessing here.

I am really at a loss. I come back to work Monday morning but let me know if there is any information I can add because I am stuck on formatting for my document before it gets published and it seems like an easy fix.

My first thought was the same as Chad’s: a bullet. Here are some other thoughts:

  1. Look in the Story Editor with the story and turn on hidden characters. What do you see? Does text appear or is it a code?

  2. Open the Layers panel and spin open the Layer. Is the item locked?

  3. Look at the pages panel for the master page that is being applied and go to that master page. Is it there?

Yes, it was a bullet. I changed the formatting by applying the font on a character style. I did not know that I needed a "bold" font, i figured i could just bold whatever I wanted; now I know. I also had to do some other things, but thank you all for your help!

It is indesign. It is a custom paragraph style with glyphs. I have a new harddrive and have recently installed the program, so when I opened up old company documents to revise it, the paragraph styles were already made but I cannot customize the text on them. I cannot select the word I need to select to change the font from normal to bold.
