InDesign 19.1, Mac OS 12.7.3
I'm trying to make an ebook and put meta data on the images in the document using the Info panel. The boxes are white, and I cannot key in any information.
Window > Info > File info... opens the dialog box.
On "Basic" I can put my cursor over all the boxes, but cannot key in any data.
I am able to put the meta data in Info in Photoshop, and it will transfer the information with the image in InDesign, but I'd rather just be able to put the information using InDesign.

I can confirm this. This might be a bug. Please log it on the InDesign User Voice: https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601180-adobe-indesign-bugs

We checked with colleagues and several versions of InDesign (2020–2024). None of these versions allows to edit the XMP-data. Use Photoshop for now. If I get any updates on this I will let you know.

@mauiyellowbird here you can read about working with metadata: https://helpx.adobe.com/incopy/using/including-metadata-story.html
The last paragraph tells you that it is not possible to do this in InDesign. So you have to work with Photoshop or any other app that lets you edit the XMP data.
You can log a feature request on InDesign Uservoice to ask for this being implemented into InDesign: https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601021-adobe-indesign-feature-requests

As @Rene Andritsch already mentioned, image metadata is simply not editable from within InDesign (as well as any other image properties for that matter). Image metadata isn't editable in InDesign via scripts either. Unfortunately, the fields in the image metdata window don't appear totally disabled, which gives a false impression that they can be edited.
