Updating broken links and link folders in bulk

We have a huge network of InDesign files that have been updated many times over the years. Originally our folders were named in Danish, but had to be changed to English over the last year to accomodate global colleagues, which resulted in a huge amount of broken links.

Additionally, in most cases, the documents were only packaged the first time around, and many of the new images aren't included in the Links folder. However, if I open up the InDesign folder and hover over the broken links individually, typically the path it displays is correct, but it takes a lot of time to relink them individually. And if the path isn't correct because the image was moved, it makes it virtually impossible for me to find.

So, my question is twofold:

1. What is the best way to quickly update a lot of missing links across many different folders if the names no longer match?

  • Can I somehow make it automatically check the file path without having to go through and relink them manually? Or have it scan all of the files in a larger folder for matching names?

2. Is there any way to automatically update or add new images to the Links folder if a document has already been packaged?

Any advice appreciated!! Thank you!

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. You can select all the links in the links panel and then use the Links panel option “Relink to folder”. You will need to repeat this for each subfolder. For more information, you may try the suggestions given on this help article(https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/graphics-links.html). Hope it helps.

Regards,

Ashutosh

So far the method you suggested is the only way I've been able to relink things so far, but it's slow going. Many of the images are in different folders.

Yes, I agree with Ashutosh.  One other thing is you can place all the photo or graphics in one folder. Then if you replace one InDesign should ask would you like to replace all. If you renamed each photo but did not replace it at the time. It will not work this way.

In most cases, yes. The folder names are the main thing that changed.
