I have been sent a file that shows as an InDesign CS4 file however when I try to open it I get the message - cannot open, upgrade plug-ins or upgrade to the latest version.
I've had a bit of a look at the different threads and it seems that it may be that it was saved from CS5 perhaps?
Could anyone please advise me in the most simple terms what I should ask the originator to do to send the file in a readable format?
This is an urgent job and if I can't get it open then I will need to advise them asap so that they can find someone else to finalise it for them.
Thanks in anticipation
Michelle

Did you run a trial of a new version?

Hi HMRN ,
what is the exact message you get?
What operating system do you use?
The first thing I'd do is to check if the file is indeed a CS4 document.
You can do this by using a script by Jongware:

Almost every time someone has made the claim that it couldn't have been created in a newer version we find out it was. Post the file somewhere and someone will check it for you.

Yes you are right. Someone opened it in CC unbeknownst to me.
Can I sk another question? Is it true that CS4 cannot run on Mac OS 10.13.2 High Sierra? Does upgrading the operating system mean that indd CS4 stops working? Does that go for photoshop 11.0.2 as well? If so it sounds like it would be a very expensive upgrade.

i'm using cs5 and exporting an idml file for my client to use in cs4. It isn't working, and they were tried to upgrade to cs5 but the mac they are using is running 10.4 (which won't run cs5) and Its an older imac (the white one) which i think can't run 10.6?
Anyway... is there a plugin that my client needs for their indesign cs4 to open the idml?

i should be more specific. The idml file i sent to the client that i exported from cs5 for them to open in cs4 is not opening.
they get this message:

Your clients need to have version 6.0.5 or 6.0.6 to open IDML from CS5 or CS5.5. Are you sure they don't have version 4, which is CS2?

yes i double check on that.
they have: Adobe Indesign CS4, Version 6.0.6

Are you sure you exported .idml?

Yes

Perhaps it was damaged in transit...

Are you exporting from CS5 7.0.4? Can you open the IDML that you export? Does it show up as [converted] when you open it?
Do you have any nonstandard plugins installed on your system?
Frankly it's pretty bizarre, IDML is very resilient and you should be able to read it even lacking plugins. And I wans't aware it ever produced that error message, which is the same exact error you get when you open a CS5 INDD file in CS4...

Seems to me someone simply renamed the INDD file to IDML.

Can you post the IDML somewhere?
This does sound really strange.

I may do that. I did notice that my indd file is 130.2 MB and the idml file
is 6.6 MB?!

acually, 6mb sounds perfect. You've dropped all the cached image thumbs among other things during the idml export, so it sounds like you do have a valid idml

well i got the idml to open on my end but the client still can't open it, even after a LONG time... Now we are moving on and the client is going to upgrade. But guess what, the only version available from adobe now is 5.5 which just sets up the same problem reversed. I'm picturing my client saving his cs5.5 and i have to upgrade to 5.5 just to open it.

If they cannot open the .idml, either thay are doing something wrong or the file is damaged. Did you zip it before sending? Mac or PC on each end?

if i could get cs4 for real or a trial it might help the situation, but I don't know where i can get it. anyone?

Yes you can expect them to fail especially InDesign. If you upgrade your system you can expect to need to replace all your apps too. “free” system upgrades can be very expensive. Yet, leaving things out of date leaves you wide open to malware attacks. It’s a crazy merry go round: we are under siege and it will cost all of us a lot. Just wait until the latest fixes slow down every computer by 30%...
