What are my options for Creating and Publishing for Mobile?

Hi,

I finished my layout for what I thought was the right setup for a retina display mobile magazine. I made it using facing pages 2048 x1500. I think I made a big mistake by not designing one layout for single page portrait and 1 alternate for landscape. Can someone fill me in on how I should be designing these pages and sizes? I would like to be able to give customers the option to download for mobile, phone or tablets.

Also I am having the hardest time ever finding documentation on how I need to publish / make these files available. Publish online I guess you can't sell editions on, and fixed epub looks terrible. What have you used to accomplish that? I would like the ability to provide video and all interactive content and affiliate links from the app or edition.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

thank you

WAIT!! don't start over, you are fine.

yes, you can have spreads, and they change to single page in ipad (on vertical view) and spreads on horizontal view. plus you can have animations and videos. and if you check the option to cache the whole thing they can view it off line. plus you can add quizes with articulate or captivate.

You can do everything you want and the way you made the layout is fine. I work with IN5 and all of this is possible because i do it.

and if you really want  to know all of the options here:

i did the research 3 years ago and interview 50 different vendors, i narrow it down to a few i liked based on cost and capabilities. I made demos with all of them and i went with IN5 at the end.

let me know if you have other questions and i would be happy to help you with answers

Start again and learn about the different formats. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Look at PDF, Publish Online, Reflowable ePub, FXL ePub and in5.

Lynda.com has a number of useful online video tutorials (you can get 30-days free).

Derek,  I'm on here to ask what is the best way to do this. I have been searching online for mo ths and all I can find is third parties that want a percentage of my money or a paid service.

I listed five formats, four of which are free if you have recent versions of InDesign.

You’ve made a huge mistake designing first without any idea of how this would be published. That’s completely backward and if you’re looking to actually monetize this, your choices are very limited and frankly, shouldn’t even include InDesign if the idea is to publish to devices and be responsive.

Hi Bob,

I wouldn't be so pessimistic…

That said: It could help very much to include the 3rd-party-plug-in In5 to the workflow.
