Question

White Icons for Indesign Files

For the last few months, my InDesign file icons are white squares.  I hoped that the new version, which I installed today, might fix this annoying issue. But no dice. I've tried some of the suggestions (resetting default program for .indd files, resetting my icon cache, etc.) No luck. I am running Windows 11.

Suggestions to fix this issue?

Thanks.

Hello @AndrewKelley,

Could you try changing the default app for the .INDD file type (Windows / macOS) to InDesign and checking if it helps? Also, try using Adobe Bridge to manage your files (https://adobe.ly/4jUhuK0) and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Anubhav,

Changing the default did not help. The icons show up correctly in Bridge (the icon is a preview of the first page of the file).

Hello @AndrewKelley,

Thanks for confirming. Could you try the following steps and check if they help:

Open File Explorer: Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.

Go to AppData: In the File Explorer address bar, type %localappdata% and hit Enter.

Find Icon Cache: Navigate to the following directory: Microsoft\Windows\Explorer. Look for the files named iconcache_*.db.

Delete the Cache: Select all the iconcache_* files and delete them.

Reboot Your Computer: After the cache has been removed, restart your computer. Windows will automatically rebuild the icon cache upon restart, which may resolve the issue.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi @Anubhav M,

I deleted the icon cache files and rebooted per your instructions, but it had no effect.

Thanks,

Andrew
