Why can't I fill the shape with text in InDesign?

I have hidden the image, this selection is on an image.

If I try on an other selection on an empty page, it works.

Hi @Chris P. Bacon

Thank you for reaching out and sharing the video. It looks like the shape you created needs to be converted to a text path.

Please see the attached image:-

To fill your shape with text, Right-Click on the shape and choose Content > Text. Please see the below image for reference.

Let us know if that helps.

Thanks,

At first I thought your path might not be closed. That is a common cause. But then, almost at the end of your video, you see that filling with text is possible --> the correct cursor appears:

No - you don't need a closed path to make a text frame 😛

At a guess - the preference is not checked

As when they click into the shape - you don't even see the blinking cursor come up to show it's active.

So my theory is that it's not being converted to a text frame.

I didn't actually see an attempt to click into the path with the cursor in the circle. I did notice, however, that re-selecting the Type tool seemed to lose that cursor.

Wouldn't surprise me if there's som corruption in the file. Try an export to .idml.
