My indd document was created in iD CS5.5. On opening in iD CS5, there is a popup which says that SharedContent plugin was used in the creation of the file. The popup then provides the option to proceed anyway. Will I be safe doing that, or is there a workflow for installing the plugin in CS5?
You cannot open an InDesign CS5.5 file directly in InDesign CS5. You need to choose File > Export > IDML and open the IDML file in InDesign CS4 or CS5.

Hello folks,
Hate to say that I would love to get some assistance with this as well. Received a file this morning from the UK that was created in 5.5. I am on 5. I've attempted downloading a trial of 5.5 but am met with an error when the Adobe Download Assistant attempts to open the disk image it just downloaded.
Here is my link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/w4imvlk356pw14q/Boots%20Template.indd
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Justin

You should ask the people who supplied the file for the .idml...

I have emailed them, but since they're in the UK I won't get a reply of any kind for another 24 hours. I needed to work on the file today, but it's not looking like it will happen.
That's the way it goes sometimes.
Thanks for the suggestion.

You guys are really great about helping each other out on this site! But can you address the issue below??
I got an .idml file from my client, but fonts and graphics are missing. Is there an easier way to get a file with all the links included? How do designers, who use plug-ins or newer versions of InDesign, get their files to press with out this issue of missing "shared content" and version problems?
For future, how should I ask to have the files sent to me?
Thanks for you help.

To press?
They send PDFs

As Bob says, send PDF for final output, but if you need to edit the files, the person sending them to you must include the links and fonts. Easiest way to do that is File > Package... If you need .idml. make it from the packaged .indd and put it inthe same folder.

Thank you! That's what I figured, but I've never had to deal with files from another designer before. I've always just packaged for press and never had a problem. But PDF is definately the sure fire way for sending to press without glitches and I'll just ask them to include an .idml file when they package the job for me. Thanks again for the reply.

Same problem here, given a file that another designer made and I have no way of contacting them. Little help here. I'm using CS5.

Same problem- had a predecessor at work leave me his InDesign Files that I need to modify, but cannot contact him anymore. I have CS5, not sure what he had. Would someone be willing to take a look at them for me? He used InDesign for Mac and I have it for PC, so that may be part of the problem.
Thanks!

Hi,
I was told by the designer that InDesign 5 can open 5.5 but I got the message about the plug-in. I need to read it in CS5.
I created a drop box account so that you could send me the IDML file. I hope you can access it. Thanks.

I also have just had the same problem - received the indesign artwork from a client to update and couldn't open the file because it said 'it uses one or more plug-ins which are not available on my system' - never had this problem before? I'm running Indesign 5 version 7.0.4 as have just updated everything through adobe - help!!

You have received a CS5.5 or CS6 file. Time to upgrade or have the client send you an IDML file. If you have to return an InDesign file I would strongly recommend the upgrade route.

The missing sharedcontent plun-in issue seems to be ever more popular, but the "more like this" links in the forum Web interface doesn't display any relevant posts. Is there a way to fix this? Is there a way to add a few FAQs and solution links into the boilerplate that's added to email posts? Suggesting a Google search for "InDesign sharedcontent plugin," without quotes, would provide solution links as well as pointing posters to the use of Google searches.
HTH
Regards,
Peter

Hi Peter.
I'm not sure how many more threads we really have about this. everyone seems to be piling into this one. For waht it's worth, we DO have a FAQ document at the main forum page that talks about this: http://forums.adobe.com/docs/DOC-1024
You know what they say, though. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. There's no way that anything we do is going to stem the tide of posts about an inability to open files or missing plugin errors.
