Why does it ask me to save when no changes were made?

Opening an ID file, making no changes, then closing it - it always asks me if I want to save changes.

Why is it doing this even though I've made no changes, just simply looked at the file???

It could be because a few things are checked and updated like: fonts located in the cloud, links to files (images, docs, pdfs...).

Can you test this with a simple file using a bit of text, unformatted?

OK, I made a file with one word typed out and it doesn't ask me if I want to save it, whenever I open/close it.

Also, if a file created/saved using an older version of InDesign is opened then it is converted and then needs to be saved.

If you make a change in printing, pdf or any other. It will ask you to save.

Why did you have the file open? Maybe that would help us answer the question better.

Just opened the file to simply look at it.

Maybe a setting was updated on InDesign's side.

The correct answer is above: it does this behaviour only on older ID files.
