Working in books, updating page numbering etc crippling slow.

I am at my wits end. Windows 11. 64 gigs ram, Latest i7 processor, rtx 3080 12 gig.

 

Of late indesign has turned into molasses.

 

Critical areas of concern are updating page number in books, and updating contents page. I am not talking a while, I mean a 40 page document taking 3 mins plus to update. But asides from this the whole interface is just rubbish.

 

In the end I decided the nuclear option and downloaded CC cleaner and acro cleaner and nuked the entire install, everything. Then reinstalled.

 

Indesign back to great, things flying, fantastic.

 

2 days later, boom back to square one.

 

Is there a fix for this, beyond being told to reset preferences, because this is not the issue and I have proven that?

I know it's easier said than done, but try also Dropbox and/or Google Drive. If you have the time for these kinds of tests. Then you'll know if the problem is related to OneDrive specifically or to working off cloud storage in general. Make sure to turn on that "Make Available Offline" option you discussed with @Mike Witherell in any cloud storage you try.


OK so I have totally worked it out! I could not understand why it was only me having the problem and not my co workers.

 

Its not onedrive at all, neither I believe is it Adobe, so my appologies are due there.

 

Its Fontbase.

 

There has been a recent update, it has a new icon and stuff and it keeps siliently quiting. When its quit, indesign runs like treacle. When its running it works perfectly. I dont suppose anyone else can check? In any case I will email the guy and explain the situation.

Many cloud-storage apps have some variation on "Make Available Offline" that has to be turned on. According to one person: "Select "Preferences" and then click on the "Account" tab. Make sure the "Files On-Demand" option is unchecked. This will ensure that all files are downloaded and available offline."

 

Personally, I had so much trouble with OneDrive and its "takeover mentality" that I stopped using it and went to the trouble of removing it from my computer. It copies all your Documents folder and Desktop folder up to the cloud, and then fights with you to get the files back if you wish to end the relationship.  Of course, many other people don't mind this, so simply finding where inside the software app service to "Make Available Offline" or something similar should help your situation.

Yes I have keep all files locally turned on. Until recently this has worked fine.

I really am not in a position to have to work from a local folder then move stuff about, I access these files over two pc's and my team also access them. Things go south very quckly when trying to make changes then copy back to a folder, infact its not reasonable to expect it.

 

I suppose we could have done it from creative cloud files but they took that away didn't they.

 

So here we are again, at the mercy of big corps whilst paying them hefty monthly subs. 

 

I have tried turning off onedrive whilst working on the document this makes no difference. I thought perhaps my SSD, but I am able to work in twinmotion etc no problem within one drive and these are huge files. Infact with adobe its only indesign with the problem. So I am still pointing the finger at Adobe.

Ok, so does it mean that the problem with book files is not related to OneDrive after all?


I'm going to say yes it is related to onedrive. Why I dont know but if I work from a book from my desktop and even from the same drive onedrive is on (but no tthe one drive folder) then its fine.

I am guessing even though one drive is quit its not totally, this is evdienced by the sync icons still being there I think.

Other things I have tried include just resetting preferences, rebooting the comnputer, updating windows 11 etc. Does this for all books/contents pages not just one.

As mentioend I jumped straight to the reinstall option. This fixed it for a day or so then it dies again. I dont think any of those tips do anything meaningful. 

 

But I have identified the issue.

 

I work from onedrive (not online but physically on the harddrive). A bug appears to have developed between indesign and onedrive and I would urge adobe to look into it as a matter of urgency.

 

I'll assume its adobe. There is also a bug in acrobat where it wont export JPEGs to onedrive, they said they were aware of it over a year ago, but yet here we are, swimming in AI slop but no fixes to common issues.
