Question

working with someone else's template

Our designer has left the company, and I cannot understand how her templates work. Is there a master layout guide or any method to get the specs on how she used the template?

I'll try to be more specific! For one thing, when pasting text into the document (it's a magazine), it is already formatted in three columns. So that when I try to place the headline, it flows into a tiny column. I'll get a screen shot to illustrate

For the headline, see if there is a Headline paragraph style set up - if there is, it probably has the Span Columns attribute. If there is not one, then use Span Columns in a new style for your headlines.

Eureka! Thank you. I'm sure I'll run into more issues - it's nice to know that you are all there, just waiting to help me navigate this!$@%^ document.

If you're running into something specific that's confusing or working in some unexpected way, post back here with details and we'll explore the possible causes and conditions. Screenshots can't hurt.

I'm not sure what you are asking, without showing the template along with a question about its use.  It's possible that some elements are on a Master page, and if the template was set up properly, there will be Paragraph Styles, Character Styles and Object Styles.

If you can tell us what specifically you are having trouble with, we might be able to be of more help.

No. You'll have to deconstruct it. I suggest you look at master pages as well as the layers panel.
