Writing Syriac in Adobe InDesign CC

Dear all,

I have a problem when I write Syriac in Adobe InDesign CC. The problem is that I am not able to get two letters, i.e. "Lamed" and "Alap" to bind together. When I write in my Word processing program, Mellel, I don't have this problem. But when I use InDesign, I get the problem.

I am attaching two print screens, one from Mellel and one from InDesign.

Syriac is written from the right to the left. I am using a MacOS High Sierra, and the InDesign version is Middle Eastern (based on Arabic).

A friend, who also writes in Syriac, and use the same applications on a Mac, don't have this problem.

Is this something that someone can help me with?

Thanks

Tomas

For Syriac, you might have to enable the World Ready Composer: Arabic and Hebrew features in InDesign

The online Help calls this "Arabic and Hebrew" but all it does is enable lots of OpenType features that the default, Western text, does not need. It also works for a smattering of other non-western fonts.

Yes, I have enabled World Ready Composer, and I am using the Middle Eastern version of InDesign CC.

I mentioned before that a friend of mine, who also use InDesign CC on a Mac, does not have this same problem. Earlier I have tried to re-install InDesign, re-install the font etc., but it doesn't work.

Could it be the font? I used Mellel for a while and I know it supports RTL languages better than many other applications. If you want to share the font you're using with me for testing. Now I have seen Syriac scripts around in my region however I don't know whether my testing is correct unless you help me out in typing.

in your first screenshot I see you have enabled "ligatures"

have you try to tick "ligatures" in indesign too?

Thanks for your answer. I have now tried to tick Ligatures on and off in InDesign, but this seem not to help unfortunately.

How did you apply "Ligatures" on your text?

did you select the two letters and then tick "Ligatures" on?

did you set it in your paragraph style?
