So I have to bring a whole book into indesign! I have a problem as it is from a pdf that has been converted to word and its hugely messed up on the formatting. Not even the text comes through uniformly its full of graphics and tables. So I have resigned myself to just importing plain text and making the changes manually.
I would like to have some help with the references.
there are 100's and is there a quick way to replace these at the end ? Quite a lot of the solutions are not totally clear exactly what I need to do.
i.e the answer glyphs alone doesnt help me.. I am new to indesign but have some quark and illustrator bgrd. (english please) as graphics dont translate. Many thanks Sophie
the raised position is not proof. If your import settings were to keep original formatting, InDesign could just get the appearance without any other options. But if you are sure they are references, you can set their formatting:
1. Type > Document Footnote Options
2. Set the Character style for references, including size, position etc. You can create the style in advance and choose it or use the New Character Style option and create the style instantly.

do they keep the Reference status or became to normal numbers? If first, you just have to change the footnotes settings (Type > Document Footnote Options) If last, you will need to create new footnotes with needed reference formatting and put the footnotes texts in the proper place.
Clear please the workfolw to say something more certain.

They stay in reference status as they are still raised above the baseline. Thanks Sophie

How are these numbers shifted upwards?
If it's done with a Baseline Shift : you can use Find/Change to search for text shifted with that particular amount, and replace it with formatting that resets the baseline shift back to 0 and applies proper superscript. See Find and change formatted text on the page describing Find/Change.

They are still in reference state I think. Thanks Sophie
