Question

Application freeze when working on network shares

Hi!

In our company we have issues editing InDesign files that reside on a network share.

Problem description:

When switching to other applications and returning to the InDesign window, sometimes InDesign hangs and shows the rainbow wheel indicator. This can take from some seconds up to a minute. It doesn't happen always, but often enough to be very annoying.

The issue doesn't occur when the same file is copied to a local folder and edited from there.

With older versions, editing directly from a network share was not a problem. The issue startet afer upgrading to version 2018 or 2019. Going back to an older version is not an option, since we depend on some new features. I can't say for sure that an Adobe update caused the issue, it is also possible, that MacOS updates triggered it.

The issue occurs on different iMacs.

What we have tried so far:

-) Updating Indesign

-) Resetting Indesign settings

-) Deactivating previews

-) Deactivating auto-save

Additional infos:

-) We are running the most current versions of MacOs and Adobe InDesign CC.

-) The network share is accessed using SMB, device is a Synology NAS (DS1817+)

-) It is a GBit network, iMacs are wired (no WiFi)

Any help / ideas highly appreciated!

Thanks,

Stefan

Have you confirmed that your network software has been updated to be fully compatible with the latest versions of InDesign and the Mac OS? Many times IT departments don't update the software because of its compatibility with firewall and virus protection software. Speak to your network administrator to get the final word about compatibility. The fact that you don't have the problem when working locally does point to a network issue.

    Hi Stefan,

We at Adobe, have very limited support for Network-based Environments because there are so many other things involved with it(Technical support boundaries for virtualized or server-based environments ) but from my personal experience, I would suggest you few things which you must check:

    • Check if this is happening with your user account only or with multiple users.
    • Check if there is any antivirus or if there is any endpoint security or if there is any restriction imposed by your IT Team. Due to this sometimes server does not allow the application to save but you are able to save outside the application.
    • In addition to what Bill has mentioned above, when Operating Systems or network policies are updated sometimes network permissions get affected. I would request if you can try to unmount the network drive and install server again on your system with Read-Write permissions. That should solve the problem.
