Effective PPI is less than my image's actual ppi

Hello,

I've got a problem with my InDesign pre-flight saying my A5 size images in my document have an effective resolution of 214ppi, when I double check using photoshop all the files are sized correctly and 300dpi so I don;t know where the resolution could have been lost?

thanks

Also, depending on how you've set your General>When Scaling preferences and the Transform panel, it would be possible to have an image that shows as 100% in the Control panel, while its parent frame(s) are scaled, which would affect Effective Resolution, e.g. you placed while a frame was selected and the selected frame was scaled, with its Frame Fitting Options set to Auto

The image shows as 100% with Transformations are Totals unchecked

But its parent container frame is scaled to 140%

Have they been scaled up to about 140%?

no, they were sized in photoshop and placed directly into indesign with no scaling whatsoever, which is why I'm confused

How did you place them?

Just clicked to unload the image in the place gun?

Did you look after the percentage values of the placed images?

Also check your Links panel and look after this in the Info part of a selected link.

Uwe

Do you have content aware fitting enabled? How about autofit?

Any of these can throw things off.

Hi beepeadesign ,

it seems that you scaled your images up in your layout.

Select an image, do not select the frame holding the image, and check the values of the % fields of the Control panel or the Transform panel.

They should be above 100%.

Regards,
Uwe

If you click within an image using the direct selection tool and look at the area of the Control Panel as highlighted in the screen shot below what percentage do you see?

If the percentage shown is higher than 100% then your effective PPI will decrease. It seems possible that somehow (possibly, as Bob suggests) using content aware  fitting or autofit your images have come into InDesign larger than you intended.

nope, it was placed in actual size, at its DPI. No re-sizing in indesign, it was exactly A5 and fit on the A5 page. Nothing in the control panel suggested it was resized either.

I dropped it in at first but then put it in again using 'place'

It said it was under 200ppi which is a huge change from 300 even if it's been slightly resized.

I've flattened the image (layered PSD) saved as TIF and boosted it to 400dpi and it fixed the problem (I was in a rush to get the job out) - never had this problem before with images made at the correct size. So wierd.

I've learned a couple of bits though so thanks everyone, I'll know to double check these things.

What version of ID are you using? Can you share the problem page and the linked image via Dropbox or your CC account?
