Fit to artboard (Illustrator Artboard)

From what I can tell there is no Fitting Option to "fit to artboard"

I am placing artwork created in Adobe Illustrator (square artboards), that contains clear space margins on all sides.

When I place into InDesign it crops to the artwork.

Fitting options do not specify a way to place the file in a way that acknowledges the artboard size.

Is there a workaround for this?

You must show options when placing Illustrator files. Note that you’ll actually be placing the PDF portion of that file.
