Question

FMCore has been stopped

Windows XP Pro, InDesign CS3 for Windows, Extensis Suitcase Fusion 2 for Windows.

I just installed Fusion 2 for windows and upon launching Indesign error message "FMCore.exe has been stopped" appeared. A recent item in this forum describes the same problem submitted by MAC  OS2 user and solution was in the Indesign edit>preferences menu to "turn on core" and "turn on at startup". In my Windows version of CS3 I don't have those options in my preferences menu. Is there another solution for Windows CS3 folks?

This error is being caused by the Suitcase Fusion PlugIn that was installed in your Adobe product when Fusion was installed. If you go to Suitcase Fusion, go to Tools, to Manage PlugIns, deselect the Adobe PlugIns that are active.

This will stop the error message from occurring when you launch. Illustrator, etal.

This does mean that font loading for these programs is not automatic, but that shouldn't be a big deal.

    susiecc,

Thanks for the reply. Installation of recently released Extensis update (version 13.2.0.37) precludes the necessity  to deselect the plugins.

I did update and it still didn't work. Of course, I am on Windows 7 so that might be part of the problem.

I found this in the userguide PDF by googling fmcore.exe:

    The Universal Type Core
The Universal Type Client communicates with the server through a startup application that runs in the background called Universal Type Core. You can stop and start the Universal Type Core manually ----- although you will only need to do this in a trouble-shooting situation.
To stop or start the Universal Type Core:

Mac: System Preferences > Universal Type Core. Click Stop or Start.

Win: Choose Start > Control Panel > Universal Type Core. Click Stop or Start.
NOTE: With the Universal Type Core running, you do not need to keep the Universal Type Client open to keep fonts active or to activate fonts with the auto-activation plug-ins.
NOTE: The process name for the Universal Type Core in the Mac OS X Activity Monitor is FMCore and in Windows Task Manager is FMCore.exe.

    Peter,

Thanks for the reply. I couldn't find a file or folder "Universal Type Core" on in control panel.  I do however have folder "Suitcase  Fusion 2 Core". When I get into it there are two option possibilities, 1. "Suitcase Fusion 2 Core" on or off and 2. "Start Suitcase Fusion 2 core at start at login" check or uncheck. I tried all possible conbinations of these two variables each of which come up with one of two error messages. When "Start at login" is checked I get error message 1. on the MSWord attachment. When "Start at login" is unchecked I get error message 2 on attachment.

    Todd.

    Todd,

There's nothing attached. You may need to zip the attachment and/or visit the website to attach it.

I don't use Suitcase. I was never happy with it on Mac back in the days of System 9, and there are plenty of reports of troubles with newer versions, too, especially on Windows. Hopefully someone who actually uses the program will check in.
