Question

ID creating ghost images?

Hi, I have this problem where my objects change places when I press 'w' and check up how it looks. It apparently places them to their old or new positions if I have moved them (moved in preview mode (or what is it called)). Also when I get off the preview mode to work/normal mode I find that the objects are in the same spot where they are when viewed in preview but ID show that they are in their old spot. I mean if not in preview mode, and I try to click the object where I see it is, it is not there but if I click the place where it is in preview mode it shows the shape of it. (This can happen also other way around). I am sorry, this is so complicated to explain.

This also makes me unable to edit text if not in preview mode. It doesn't do anything to the box. Some text box works fine, some doesn't.

I have turned the program off and on but the problem come back time to time. Do I have to uninstall or is this some weird mode I do not know about?

    Hi HeliK ,

if you are on Mac OS X and GPU support is enabled for InDesign try to disable GPU support.

    Check your preferences.

    Hope that helps,

    Uwe

    Hi Heli,

Sorry to hear about this issue. I am hopeful that the issue is resolved by the steps suggested by Bill. If not, I would request if you can share a few more details like:

    • Operating System
    • Exact version of InDesign
    • Is the issue related to a specific document(s)/asset(s)? If yes, can you please share the document(s)/asset(s) with us?
    • Error snapshot or video recording of the issue.

    Regards,

    Srishti

^In this you can see how I have selected the object but it appears to be in different place. In screenshot below, object in it's correct place and shows how it should be.

Sadly, I couldn't find the folder Bill told to find. So I could not try that.

I have Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6 and InDesign 14.0.1.
Problem seems to happen with this document only. Haven't noticed it with other files.

I will try to turn that GPU off and see if the problem continues.

But thank you very much for your help already!

The first thing I would suggest is to trash your InDesign preferences. You have not said what version of InDesign you're using or what operating system but the kind of problem you're describing sounds like the program may have corrupted preferences. See if restoring it to its default state helps.

    To trash preferences:

For Macintosh Users: The User Library folder in which InDesign’s preferences are stored is hidden by default on most Macintoshes. To access it make sure that InDesign is closed and click on the desktop to launch a Finder Window (Command-N). With this window in column view follow the path User>Home folder (it’s the folder with an icon that looks like a house—it may have the user’s name rather than “Home”) and click on the Home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. “Library” will now appear within the Home folder. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the folder called “Adobe InDesign” and the file called “com.adobe.InDesign.plist” and delete both that folder and that file. When InDesign is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

For Windows Users: You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching InDesign and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.

    To do so:

On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>. Make sure that InDesign is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create  new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.
