InDesign 2019 performance issues after update (14.0.3) on Windows 10

Using ID CC 14.0.3 on a Windows 10 system. Whenever I launch, it gets to the main screen and then locks up. At first I thought it was VPN related, but it is happening on or off my VPN. Pretty sure it was working fine before 14.0.3 update.

I've already tried changing the name of the folders in the AppData directories.

I prefer to not uninstall to get previous versions. Any ideas?

UPDATE - FIXED!

Finally got this resolved and am posting so hopefully others do not struggle so much as well.

I noticed my CC app was also having trouble, it would not update completely. It would get between 70-90% and then fail with a 184 error. After much troubleshooting, a co-worker found she had to rename the following folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\CoreSyncExtension

Name it to anything else, I renamed mine to CoreSyncExtension_pleasework

After this I launched the CC app and it updated quickly, without error. Next a normal Windows reboot and launched InDesign. Finally, finally, finally it did not lock up and is allowing me to work with it. I am not sure what's up with that folder above, but somehow that appeared to get corrupt. This took way too long to figure out, but so glad it is working now.

Hi there,

I am so sorry to hear about the performance issues you all are facing with InDesign. I would request if you can try the following steps and share results:

  • Try booting the system into Safe Mode (https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode) and check how it works there. It starts your system so that it performs certain checks and prevents third party software/ services from automatically loading or opening. If it works fine in Safe mode, then there is some third party service or application like antivirus, plugins or web extensions which is conflicting with the InDesign and making it slow.
  • If that doesn't help, try login into Hidden Admin Account: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpEagxSWzX0 and check how it performs there. If it works fine there, then it could be related to Permission errors on InDesign folders. Please try the following steps to repair the permissions on InDesign preferences folders and let us know if that helps.
    - Go to following locations:

    - C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Adobe\ InDesign
    - C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\ InDesign
    - Right-click the folder InDesign and choose Properties.
    - Click the Security tab, and then click Edit to set permissions.
    - In the Permissions dialog, select your user name. In the Permissions area, deselect the Deny check box.
    - Click OK twice.
    - Launch Adobe InDesign.

Let us know if that helps or if you need any further assistance.

Regards,

Srishti

Hello. Thank you for the response. Unfortunately I cannot try booting in safe mode (yet), as I need a password from my IT first. And again unfortunately, no matter what else I try I still have the problem, and InDesign is effectively dead on my system.

Whenever I launch, it locks up. I have tried:

- Renaming the folders in both Roaming and Local directories (multiple times):

- Trashing preferences

- Uninstall/Reinstall 14.0.3, 14.0.2, 14.0.1, 14.0 and even went to CC2018 13.1.1

- Deleted all registry entries and reinstalled

- Let it sit overnight to see if it ever responded

- Verified all permissions

- Use on or off the VPN

- Try launching direct from exe file, or from opening a document

- Acrobat Pro, PhotoShop, Illustrator all are ok

Try trashing your InDesign preferences.

To do so on a PC:

You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching InDesign and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.

To do so: On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>. Make sure that InDesign is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files in this manner is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

Hello Bill, thanks for the reply. I did try that but still no luck. It simply gets to the main screen and then freezes. I have to go to Windows task manager to end task. I'll try to post a picture of what the task manager shows. Thanks.

Is your Windows 10 up to date? If not try updating it and see if the problem persists.
