I'm using adobe garamond pro for my 40 page magazine. I know that sans serif typeface are good for body text. But I like the garamond pro 12 pt in the body text. Am I commiting any type crime ? is there any exception to this rule" only sans serif fonts are good in body text".

Thanks

If there was ever any 'rule', it was the opposite - serif for body, sans for headings.

Personally, I wouldn't set body text in a magazine as large as 12pt. It feels like speaking to people condescendingly slow. 9-10pt is usually my starting point.

Depends on the audience and the font.

I think the number one rule is that there is no rule.

Where have you heard this 'rule'?

There isn't any rule by law, but I think it is a rule by practice.

The rule used to be that you should only use serif fonts for body text. In print it tended to be read better. However, on screens, sans serif tends to look better, so a lot of people have moved to using sans serif to appear more modern regardless of print or screen.

If it looks good it is good.

Serif text is perfectly acceptable as body text.
