Hi Guys
Just a quick question to see if anyone using indesign 14.0.1 on Mac is have any issues still? Im about to create my monthly magazines and i didn't want to update if Adobe still haven't sorted the issues everyone was having last time. Is it safe to update?
Thanks in advance
Glen

Hi Glen,
see into this:
And also here:
Test your workflow from a to z with 14.0.1.209.
You can run older versions of InDesign like CC 2018.1 side by side with the latest one.

Uwe

Thanks for this I will keep using the 2018 version for the time being until they release 14.0.2

Hi Glen,
is there a particular behavior of CC 2019 you want to get fixed?

Hi Uwe
sorry for not replying sooner, the main issue i had with 14.0 was the time it took to save a PDF and working in a 100 page document the speed of which i could move around the document i constantly had the spinning beach ball of death. I had read on another forum that a chap with a brand-new Mac pro was having the still issues. I have a standard 8gb ram with a 1.6 GHz i5 processor on os 10.14.3

Hi Glen,
the first thing I'd do is updating the RAM to 32 GB or 64 GB if possible.
That will increase the speed of InDesign dramatically, I think.

Hi Uwe
Yes this would be great however i have a 21" iMac that is not expandable but i would also say as is my last reply there are guys out there with brand new iMac Pro's with 32gb and more RAM that are having the same issue. If 13.0 works perfectly well on my 8gb why should it be any different for 14.0.1? If adobe would like to help me pay for a new mac im happy for them to do that but to alienate 000's of designers that use Indesign on the same spec's as myself is just madness.

Hi Glen,
did you see into the specs for InDesign CC 2019?
16 GB is recommended:
Also note that your OS X 10.14.3 will eat up RAM as well.

Hi Uwe
yes it say minimum 4gb ram recommended 16gb so 8gb in the middle should be able to run the program without any issues as it did with 13.0 I will download again and see what happens.
Cheers

That's a horribly underpowered machine...and if it has a mechanical hard drive you can add that to the list of bottlenecks.

Have you tried resetting the InDesign Preferences to see if that helped?
And other things like temporarily turning off pre-flight.

Hi Derek
Yes i have tried this but gave up and re-installed 13.0 however i have not tried the 14.01 so maybe i just need to bite the bullet and see what happens. Are you having any issues with 14.0.1?

Hi Derek,
how are the specs of your machine?

I've got two Win 10 machines. Both with i7s (6th gen and 8th gen) and solid state drives. Desktop with 32GB of RAM and laptop with 16GBs. Both run InDesign CC2019 very well.
That out of the way, the point here is that Adobe is creating software for new hardware and operating systems. Just because CC2018 runs well on a machine is no guarantee that CC2019 will.
We don't even have full details on the OP's system. I'll bring up that hard drive again, too. Solid state drives will speed up a machine in a way you'd have to see to believe.

And, InDesign uses the startup drive for virtual memory, you can't specify external scratch disks the way you can in Photoshop. I agree an older drive could be a bigger problem than RAM, especially if the drive is full.
But, a slow startup drive should also be a problem with CC2018. It could be that Glen had a full disk, and too many applications running for 8GB when he tested CC2019?

Hi Rob
I do have a 1TB HDD and i have 890gb free, yes it can slow when i have AI PS and IN open of course i would expect that but the issue i was experiencing was the same as many other people that downloaded 14.0. so i don't totally agree with Bob Levine and PC users may not have have the same issues and OS users and there is no way i would buy a PC ever again.
Thanks Rob

I’ve replace mechanical drives in Macs and Windows machines. I use Macs and Windows machines interchangeably and choose Windows these days, but we’re off track…you’re wrong about the hard drive. For $80 for a new SSD and $75 or so for 16GB or RAM you’ll breathe new life into that machine.

One more thing...I assume that machine has had numerous operating system upgrades through the years. Swapping out the mechanical drive for an SSD and doing a clean install of everything would add to the efficiency.

but the issue i was experiencing was the same as many other people that downloaded 14.0.
But, I don't think the problems are universal.
Did you try the regular troubleshooting options—delete your CC2019 caches and preference folders, disable any third party plugins and scripts? It also could be a specific document problem, did the export slowdown happen with all documents?

Hi Rob
Thanks I have done exactly that and it all seems to be working I have opened the original document and i dont seem to be having the same issue as in the 14.0 update so I believe that the issues i was experiencing have been cleared up with the 14.0.1 update happy days, and i don't need to buy a new mac

Hi Bob
I appreciate what you say, however i cannot afford to update my mac as yet, Im not expecting the new indesign to be lightning fast but i would expect it to take less than 10 minutes to export a PDF.
However whist chatting i have downloaded the latest version and it does appear to be working as it should, last time i would get the spinning ball whilst scrolling through the pages it is not doing this now fingers crossed it stays like this.

I'm having no issues in InDesign CC 2019.1 (14.1) and latest Mojave. Having an SSD drive (I use a 2016 MacBook Pro) will help immensely.

Hi Steve
Thanks for your input, no it would appear that i also no longer have any issues with 14.0.1 and latest Mojave. With regards to the SSD yes i will be looking to upgrade when i baby a new mac although i do need to be able to convince my wife that i need a new one.

Great! Glad it's working for you. When I switched to a MBP with SSD three years ago, the difference in speed was like night and day. I still keep an older iMac (circa 2012) and the old hard drives and limited RAM make it run like cold molasses.
