Is there a way to outline page numbers in inDesign?

I have this document and everything is outlined except to the page numbers which I if I do from the master page, it will turn into letters instead of numbers.  I am wondering tif there is a way to do it as my print shop wants everything in the document to be outlined and if it is not outlined does it affect the printing process? Thank you very much for your help and advise.

Your print shop is giving you old and outdated advice. There are a number of issues with outlining all of the type in a document only one of which being that the content is no longer editable. The second is that outlining type tends to "fatten" the appearance of the type.

I'll get off of my soapbox now for a second. To answer your actual question. What you'd need to do is override the page number on each page of the document to make it available for outlining. In the pages panel, select all of the pages in the document, then from the Pages panel menu, choose "Override All Master Page Items". This will release the page numbers (along with anything else on the master pages), and make them available on each page of the document where you'll now be able to outline them.

But again, this is a lousy workflow. If the printer is worried about the fonts, why not just output to a PDF file with fonts embedded and provide that to the printer? I know we're getting into the weeds with this discussion but if your printer isn't willing to accept files that are not outlines, you may want to look for another printer.

Will they actually reject the job if the text is not outlined? This comes up a lot.

Whether or not your print shop will reject the job is a question I can't answer. I can tell you however that this practice is so outdated and so unnecessary that there's truly no logical explanation for doing so in this day and age. Even years ago, it was typically a way to avoid the hassle of making sure that all fonts were included when having a job printed. A PDF with embedded fonts should be all a printer needs to output a job properly. I could make a laundry list of problems that are caused using this approach but I won't bore you with it here. I'd wager a guess that if you asked your printer why they require it, you probably won't get a very good answer. More than likely they continue to do it because it's the way they always have done it. Have a dialog with your printer and ask the question. And if they still ask for outlined fonts, I'd look for another printer.

Outlining type is not recommended. Consider changing your printer.
