Margins in InDesign

For both Amazon and Ingram Spark: we are asked for Inside (gutter) margins and outside margins.

In InDesign, it asks for Top/Bottom/Inside/Outside margins. I need .5 inches on all sides. But I need a .625 in gutter. Do I put .625 for gutter in Indesign Margins & Columns, and what do I put for Inside margin? It that the same as the gutter margin? Would I put Inside: .5 in and the gutter .625 in? Doesn't that make the facing pages gutters both .5 & .625??  Confused.

Also, can I set all the margins in master pages?

Thanks, Phoebe

Hi Phoebe:

You set the margins via File > New > Document. When the checkbox for Facing Pages is disabled, the margins show: Top, Bottom, Left and Right. When the checkbox for Facing Pages is enabled, the update to show: Top, Bottom, Inside, Outside. The Inside value is the spread gutter value—the right margin on the left pages and the left margin on the right pages.

If you want to edit the margins, you can use File > Document Setup. Both of these commands edit the A-Master page directly, and the body pages based on A-Master will update at the same time, unless they have overrides.

In the margins/columns for each page it also shows gutter margin. So for .625 inside, which is the gutter margins,  I would put .625 for the gutter margin also, even though they are the same measurement, inside = gutter, correct?

After a document is set up, the File>document setup DOES NOT seem to change the master pages; I had to change in Master Pages.  InDesign CC2019 on IMac.

Thanks, Phoebe
