I am regularly exchanging files with a client - we both package the file and work on the packaged files only. My understanding is that ID will use the fonts and images from the packaged file folders [fonts, links]. The ID files are part of book files and there are more than 100 files. the fonts that are often shown as missing is are Montserrat-Bold.ttf, Montserrat-light_0.ttf; monterrat-REgualr.ttf and Montserrat-SemiBold.ttf. I took great care when initially creating these files to only use Montserrat.ttf fonts although there was a conflict with fonts form Typekit. By deleting the typekit fonts, I thought the problem was cleared. However, when I receive the packaged files, they are ok the first time I open them . AS soon as I change and save them , the next time I open, I get messages about these missing fonts. I have discovered that by deleting the fonts in the packaged "fonts" folder - the fonts are ok [not missing]. I do this to avoid having to reassign all the missing fonts in each of the many more than 100 files. I would like to understand this a bit better and to know if this is the best solution. Please help me to grok this. [Windows 10, CC2018,

The subfolder that contains the fonts must be named Document fonts. Capital D. Lowercase f. A spacebar space in-between the two words. Is that the way your files are organized?

sorry - perhaps I was not clear - yes - the folder is Document fonts - what I would like to understand is why deleting the fonts in this folder is a fix for those fonts appearing as missing when the files are opened a second time after saving.

When you first open the files and the fonts are okay, can you go to Find Font, select the Montserrat fonts, click the Info button and see 1) The type of font (TTF? Typekit?) and 2) The path to where they're stored? That should give you a clue regarding what's happening.
In my experience, what you describe likely has to do with duplicate fonts of different types (Mac TT vs. Windows TT for example) installed at the same time. Crazy things happen until you remove/hide one format. Also that font "Montserrat-light_0.ttf" ... strange name. Why the _0? Are you sure it's a "healthy" font and not like a resource fork or something?

hm - yes the client is working on a mac while I'm on windows - when I open the file it points to the "document fonts" folder which is par tof the package - looking at the adobeFNT19.lst file in the same folder - I get this about the font
%BeginFont
Handler:DirectoryHandler
FontType:TrueType
FontName:Montserrat-Light
FamilyName:Montserrat
StyleName:Light
FullName:Montserrat Light
MenuName:Montserrat Light
StyleBits:0
WritingScript:Roman
OutlineFileName:X:\2018 Pricebooks\Final FIles\one-touch Folder\Document fonts\Montserrat-Light_0.ttf
DataFormat:sfntData
hasSVG:no
VariableFontType:NonVariableFont
FileLength:259416
FileModTime:1323745200
WeightClass:300
WidthClass:5
AngleClass:0
NameArray:0,Mac,4,Montserrat Light
NameArray:0,Win,1,Montserrat Light
NameArray:0,Win,16,Montserrat
%EndFont
I deleted the fonts form this folder and copied them onto my Windows/fonts folder [these are the only Montserrat fonts installed there and typekit is turned off.]- and when I examine the font there it shows as Montserrat-Light_1.ttf. I am not sure where the underscore and number come from. so far - deleting the font in the "document fonts" folder seems to work but I really would like to understand this.

Please post a screenshot of the documents fonts folder from File Explorer showing details. Do these fonts show a size of 0kb?

Somethings wonky. Those files look like they were copied on top of identically named fonts and so they were ammended with the _1.
Try this. Rename the file by removing the _1 and see if that fixes it.

am unable to change the font name in the windows/fonts folder- furthermore it is not just montserrat-Light but all the montserrat fonts [semi-bold, regular, bold]

Those are in the fonts folder? Something’s definitely not right here.

the 2 images are reversed in my previous post - the first image is form the windows/fonts - the second form the packaged Document fonts

As I said, somewhere those fonts got renamed and I suspect that's the issue.

actually - the issue is why the fonts are "missing" when the file is opened the 2nd time - the fonts are the same in the document fonts folder and in the windows fonts folder. I can get aroudn the "missing" issue by deleting them form the document fonts folder - forcing the fonts to be used form the system [windows/fonts] and then they are ok . This is strange to me and I would like someone to explain this - I think the weird name of one of the fonts is not the root cause.
