Question

Pasting shapes from Illustrator to Indesign very slow

I am running on Windows 10 and this is the second time it suddendly takes Indesign cca 10 seconds to paste shape(s) from Illustrator and the other way too. No matter if that is a simple rectangle or complex group of shapes.

I went through dozens of posts dealing with clipboard and tried everything to solve the issue. Resetting .ai/indd preferences, reinstalling the apps, installing older versions of Indesign CC. Rebooting. Both illustrator randomly freezes for 6 - 10 secund, sometimes it paste the object, sometimes it does not.

Once it starts doing nothing helps. The only way helped me when it started doing for the first time - I reinstalled the entire Windows. Then everything worked smoothly for two weeks, now it suddendly started again.

Any help much appreciated

I am desperate for some durable solution

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about this issue. I would request if you can share a few more details like:

  • OS(Exact version of Windows/MAC)
  • Exact version of InDesign
  • Is it happening with a particular file?
  • Where the files are saved Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System /External HDD /Dropbox /Google Drive)?

Hi Srishti,

Here are my answears:

OS(Exact version of Windows/MAC)

The system information

OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro

Version: 10.0.17763 Build 17763

Processor: AMO Ryzen Threadripper 1920X 12-Core Processor, 3500 Mhz, 12 Core

RAM: 32 GB

Exact version of InDesign

InDesign version: 14.0.1 x64

Once it starts happening, it is the same in all version, no matter if I downgrade or update. Erase all preferences, unused swatches. The first paste takes cca 10 seconds after copying it to clipboard. The repeated copy/paste of the same shape paste OK.

Is it happening with a particular file?

No, It happens with all files. I tried it with old projects.

Where the files are saved Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System /External HDD /Dropbox /Google Drive)?

Some of the are saved SSD drive(system) and CC, Dropbox, some are archived on HDD Disk. No external drive.

Not sure what else can I do. I cleared the clipboard in Windows. The default settings are set both in Ai an Indd. I even paste shapes directly from Illustrator to Powerpoint. It works without any problem too. So this is a mistery where can be the source of this problem. I believed I solved the problem three weeks ago after finding no fix, but reinstalling the whole system. And after two weeks it starts happening again in the middle of working in Ai and Indd. Reinstalling and configurating the entires system again and hoping it wont start again is real nightmare for me.

Thank you in advance for any ideas.

Hi,

Thanks for sharing the details. I would request if you can try these steps and let us know if that helps:

Try resetting preferences manually:

  • Close all Adobe applications.
  • Go to Locations :
  • C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
  • C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Adobe.
  • Delete or Rename InDesign folders.
  • Launch InDesign from CC.

Please note: Resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also take a backup of the folders in case you want to.

If that does not help, please check how it works in new user account: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/4026923/windows-10-create-a-local-user-or-administrator-account

Regards,

Srishti
