Hello!

I have a project in InDesign where I want to place an instance of a placed icon again. Is there some sort of a drag and drop option instead of placing it from disk again or copying it?

Unfortunately, dragging and dropping from the links menu isn't an option, but it's an awesome idea - you should definitely recommend this suggestion to the indesign uservoice: Adobe InDesign Feedback

Basically, use Alt/Opt-Drag to Duplicate (and optionally - Shift to align).

More on this feature here, or just google.

One comment.

they say there: It is very important to hold down the option/alt key BEFORE you grab any of the objects.

I can’t confirm this, at least on Windows. You can grab and move object, and press Alt key while moving with no problems - it still works.

For 4 and 5 there's a more convenient technique called gridify.

Alt-Drag is very good for fast and simple duplicating.

Well, I have to copy a placed icon from page 5 to the cover so this way isn't that good. I thought there would be an option to place an image from the links panel by dragging and dropping.

Hi JemSow ,

a variant workflow to duplicate a selected item is to have two layout windows open for the same document.

In one you have the cover page active, the other one is showing page 5 with your selected item.

Just drag the selected item without holding any key from one layout window to the other.

Uwe

Beyond a purely theoretical and intellectually interesting point of view, am I the only one to find all these workarounds a bit overthought  compared to the venerable copy/paste?
