Question

Place Word document with Hindi characters

I am trying to place a Word document that contains Hindi characters (which use the Nirmala UI font). Some of the Hindi characters are changed in the resulting InDesign document. Most of the characters are the same, but a few are different. I am using Place, not cut and paste. Any suggestions for why this is happening and how to avoid the changes?

Make sure in your paragraph style options you have: Advance Character Formats/Language/ Hindi (India) and Justification/Composer/Adobe World-Ready Paragraph Composer. Let us know if that solves the issue.

Thank you for the suggestions. It appears that those 2 changes solved the problem. Hindi is one of many languages that I am trying to deal with. What happens with languages that are not listed in Advanced Character Formats/Languages (such as Chinese)? How can I be sure that the Unicode characters in the placed Word document are rendered correctly?

For Chinese try this: http://www.transpacificdigital.com/downloads/

I have experience working with Hindi and my translator double checks that everything looks OK. Maybe other contributors here can shed some light on working with languages not listed in Advanced Character Formats.

Regarding making sure that characters are rendered correctly you'll need a native speaker of the language you are dealing with to confirm that everything looks OK.
