Question

Reader problems with fixed layout EPUB created in InDesign 14.0.2 x 64

I exported a fixed layout EPUB and have found that the end result is very poor in ADE 4.4.1, with headings being scrambled. In Calibre 3.43 the results are much better, apart from the text looking a little blocky, a few text box strokes missing and a couple of underlines being slightly too high. When the EPUB was exported as a PDF (Print) the result was perfect.

I have signed up for Flightdeck and ran the EPUB file through that. It came up with some Validation errors. I have no idea how to fix them though and don't know if those errors would contribute to the reader problems

I will attach some screen shots which will show what I'm talking about. The info for each is in the top left corner.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Richard

The only reliable fixed layout epub reader is the Books app on iOS and Mac.

Adobe should be embarrassed by ADE. It's garbage.

Thank you for your comment Bob. Yes, it does seem odd that a file created and exported with an Adobe program does not read well on an Adobe reading app. I'm afraid I'm a newbie with InDesign, although I'm familiar with other Adobe programs such as Photoshop, Premiere, Audition, Encore. Are the problems I'm experiencing with the epub in ADE mostly a result of ADE's shortcomings or are there things I should be doing prior to export that could alleviate the problems? Thanks again.

I wrote this last year: https://www.boblevine.us/the-fixed-layout-epub-missing-piece-reliable-readers-for-windows-and-android/

Nothing's really changed. Edge has gotten way better but there's still a couple of deal-breaking bugs in it.
