Recovered InDesign Files

Hey Everyone,

I recently lost my files and I purchased the EaseUS software to recover them, which it did. However, I'm having an issue with some of the found .indd files. Some of the  recovered files open just fine in Indesign, but I get the following error when trying to open other .indd files:

Cannot open file "X". Adobe Indesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application (*which it is not).

Additionally, in the EaseUS software, all of the .indd files show their correct file size (1mb for example). But when I recover it to my computer it says the file is only about 1,000kb. When I hover over these files with my mouse it says the file is 1mb though. Does anyone know what is happening and/or how to fix it so I can open my .indd files? Thank you all for reading this and for any help!

Derek

Generally speaking, these file recovery utilities are simply attempting to find disk file entries marked as deleted and to restore them as active, assuming that the disk sectors previously used by the files are not assigned to another file at the time of the attempted recovery. The problem is that between the time the file was originally deleted and the time the recovery was performed, the disk sectors may have been used by yet another file that was subsequently deleted. In that case, the disk sectors were likely overwritten by some other file. Hence, InDesign would not find valid InDesign documents in those sectors. Nothing can be done to fix such situations other than being careful what you delete and to be rigorous in doing backups.

There is a possibility that some of those files are toast. You need a reliable back up system to avoid this in the future.

Working in a Dropbox or OneDrive folder may be enough but an external harddrive with automatic back up software wouldn’t hurt.
