Does anyone know how to convert a fraction to a small fraction like the one you would see in a recipe?

If you're using an updated version of InDesign, you'll find that if you highlight your current fraction you'll see a blue highlight under the text with options for proper fractions displayed. Choose the fraction and it will apply the proper fraction to your text. Keep in mind, this will only work if you're using an OpenType font. All Adobe Fonts available with your subscription are OpenType fonts.

If you're not using an OpenType font and you don't have the ability to change it, use Dan Rodney's script as Colin Flashman suggestions in the previous post.

Dan Rodney's Proper Fraction script will handle most fractions that are beyond quarter, third, half, etc.

If the answer wasn't in my post, perhaps it might be on my blog at colecandoo!

Options include:

  • Many OpenType fonts with extended character sets have other fractions supported. Use the glyph panel to see them. You could then find/change the fractions.
  • GREP formatting in your paragraph styles to look for the fraction pattern and apply characters styles.
  • Use a script to convert fractions.
  • OpenType font with extended features that includes "arbitrary fractions".
