Substituted Glyphs in Gotham

Please try adjusting your settings in the Universal Type Client setting in InDesign. Use the following article and Turn Off the option of 'Pick Best Match':

If the font is not available/installed, it will not substitute for a similar/alternate font and will present you with a missing font dialog box that includes additional font information and our FontSense ID Number, which we use to identify the correct font(s) being used.

We have a similar situation. Different versions of Gotham from different clients. We have a version that has worked fine for years. Then we got a new one. That's when we noticed some glyph substitutions. I've never run into this before with multiple versions of the same font. As you mention, it's not usually the case.

The fonts are showing OpenType - PS in Suitcase. We are running Macs. I think we've cleaned out the versions that were giving us trouble. Thanks for taking the time to share your case. It seems like there is some strange behavior to be expected from Gotham. We'll have to keep an eye on it moving forward.

Yes. My company has had several instances of oddity with Gotham. Our issues were related to the fact that different clients had provided the agency with their version of Gotham and so we wound up with versions from Opentype, Postscript Type 1 and Truetype. Worse yet there were multiple versions of each type of font created at different times. This sort of thing is not unusual in an agency but what was unusual was that the different versions of Gotham had some weird quirks (this is not usually the case with multiple versions of the same font). The most blatant quirk was that superscript characters such as ® would display in a different size from one version to another. There were also tracking, kerning and even leading differences between the versions. We work in a multi-user environment and many operators need to work on the same job but it became impossible to make sure that the correct version of Gotham was open on any given machine as the job routed from one computer to the next (even with FontExplorer Pro auto-activation) and headache inducing issues arose. You did not say what version of Gotham you have (Opentype, Postscript Type 1 or Truetype). My suggestion would be to get the most up to date Opentype version. Opentype works completely cross platform (you did not say what operating system you are on) and, in my experience, is the most reliable. With an oddball font like Gotham that is essential.
