Upgrade Plug-ins? InD CS4

I have been sent a file that shows as an InDesign CS4 file however when I try to open it I get the message - cannot open, upgrade plug-ins or upgrade to the latest version.

I've had a bit of a look at the different threads and it seems that it may be that it was saved from CS5 perhaps?

Could anyone please advise me in the most simple terms what I should ask the originator to do to send the file in a readable format?

This is an urgent job and if I can't get it open then I will need to advise them asap so that they can find someone else to finalise it for them.

Thanks in anticipation

Michelle

Yes you can expect them to fail especially InDesign. If you upgrade your system you can expect to need to replace all your apps too. “free” system upgrades can be very expensive. Yet, leaving things out of date leaves you wide open to malware attacks. It’s a crazy merry go round: we are under siege and it will cost all of us a lot. Just wait until the latest fixes slow down every computer by 30%...

i'm using cs5 and exporting an idml file for my client to use in cs4. It isn't working, and they were tried to upgrade to cs5 but the mac they are using is running 10.4 (which won't run cs5) and Its an older imac (the white one) which i think can't run 10.6?

Anyway... is there a plugin that my client needs for their indesign cs4 to open the idml?

i should be more specific. The idml file i sent to the client that i exported from cs5 for them to open in cs4 is not opening.

    they get this message:

"Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Indesign."

Your clients need to have version 6.0.5 or 6.0.6 to open IDML from CS5 or CS5.5.  Are you sure they don't have version 4, which is CS2?

It is indeed a CS5 file. They can send you a .idml file that you can open, but there is now guarantee that hit will look the same in CS4 as it did in the original, and finishing it up may not be a good idea, especially if it needs to go back to them and be reopened in CS5. At the very least, ask for a PDF as well so you know waht they expect it to look like.

    Thanks very much Peter.

Looks like I will have to forego this one because one of the things they are asking for is that a PDF be created for display on a web page.

    Thanks again.

And why can't you do that?
