P: Keywords transferring from laptop to desktop - existing keywords do not transfer

I use a laptop when travelling.  I have exported the keyword list from my desktop to the laptop.

I added a new photo onto the laptop with the keywords"barkblur' and 'persontest".  They show on the laptop keyword list.  'barkblur' is an exisiting keyword and shows in the folder structure. Whilst 'persontest' a new keyword shows outside the folder structure.RackMultipart20190526457481k6v-e33ab19e-128d-4c16-bf26-0f5a8d874a46-1884533182.pngRackMultipart20190526457481k6v-e33ab19e-128d-4c16-bf26-0f5a8d874a46-1884533182.png

I then selected the folder and chose export as catalog and ticked export negative file and include available previews. and saved it to an external hard drive as TEST. Then copied the TEST exported catalog folder to my desktop computer.

On the desktop the only one of the keywords show on the photo - 'persontest' only and not 'barkblur'. Person test is a new keyword and bark blur is an exisiting keyword.

IN the keyword list the 'barkblur' numbers have not increased and the 'persontest" which is the new keyword does show.

Image is not available

I hope someone can help with this. Thank you

One step you did not mention is  the import from the test catalog into your maincatalog. Did you do that?

Yes I did: I added a folder in Lightroom on my desktop and did File - import from another catalog and chose file from Hard Drive and then chose the lrcat.  Then imported to Lightroom.

And do these keywords show when opening the Test catalog in Lightroom?
This way it's possible to narrow it down to the export proces or import proces.

The last 2 screenshots show that only one keyword (the new one) transferred over to the desktop catalog.  So persontest transferred over whilst barkblur (an existing keyword) did not.

When I transferred the catalog over I used a thumb drive.  I just opened the thumb drive lrcat and the keywords show as below.  So this makes me think that the keywords already in the folder structure do not export to the Test Catalog.?RackMultipart20190526588811mu8-41015f7e-d906-4725-b282-d63092254bfb-1946832393.png

A test of one test sample is no test. I would suggest you first try this again, because this is not normal behavior.

Note that in the screenshot of the Keyword List of the exported catalog, BLUR is a leaf keyword (no child keywords) -- it has the number 0 following it, and its expand triangle is greyed out. That is, LR has put COLOR/SHAPES/BLUR > BLUR into the exported catalog but not the leaf keyword "barkblur".

Normally, LR only puts that part of the keyword hierarchy into the exported catalog that is actually assigned to the exported photos.  So the fact that BLUR is included but not its child "barkblur" strongly indicates there's some kind of bug.

I tested whether the keyword attribute Include On Export affects which keywords are placed in the exported catalog -- it doesn't.

So I agree with Johan, try this again, with a single, different photo assigned the the two keywords "barkblur" and "persontest".  Do both keywords make it into the exported catalog? Provide a screenshot of the Keyword List panel of the exported catalog.

Hi John  the last screen shot shows this. This is after I have imported into my desktop Lightroom.

When I transfer the catalog from the laptop to the desktop I use a thumbdrive.  Below is the screen shot when I open the lrt cat on the thumbdrive before I import it into my desktop Lightroom.  I also have screenshots of all the steps that I do when transferring the catalog if you need to see them.

In a previous post, you showed the Keyword List of the thumbdrive catalog, and it didn't show "barkblur", "birdblur", or any of the other keywords under BLUR?

I will screenshot 3 images: I hope these are clear.
Keyword list laptop
RackMultipart20190526848821sru-1f0b00ed-eec4-4a3e-ba3b-617f09bc5980-1837119831.png

Keyword list on thumdrive - i did export as catalog - save to external hard drive and ticket export negative file and include available previews.  Then I transferred the thumbdrive to my desktop and opened the lrcat from the thumbdrive.

This is the keyword list:

RackMultipart201905262178318yv-b045ac48-126a-49ff-9290-95f2c6997e40-1601984648.png

And the keyword box next to the image has a greyed out "working" in it.

Then when I import from the thumbdrive to my desktop using Import - another catalog into my Lightroom desktop I get this keyword list

RackMultipart2019052683560palh-a6ccc0bc-f0f5-4ccf-811e-da5c7968716a-908207557.png

and this in the keyword field

So it looks like something in the export process from the laptop to the thumbdrive?  Shall i send you the screenshots of the process that I do?
Thank you
Belinda

"And the keyword box next to the image has a greyed out "working" in it."

That's interesting. How about a screenshot of the entire LR window, including the "working" message?  That could provide additional clues.

That "working" in the Keywording panel is also worrisome.  I assume it never goes away. In other contexts, that has been a symptom of underlying bugs.

Some more troubleshooting steps:

1. On your laptop LR, is the setting Preferences > Treat '/' As A Keyword Separator checked or unchecked?

2. On your desktop LR, is the setting Preferences > Treat '/' As A Keyword Separator checked or unchecked?

3. In your laptop LR's Keyword List, right-click the keyword COLOR/SHAPES/BLUR and do Edit Keyword. Change the name of the keyword to "COLOR SHAPES BLUR" (replacing /'s with space).

4. Export the folder as a catalog as you've been doing.

5. Open that exported catalog in your desktop LR (don't import it into the main catalog yet).

6. Do you see "barkblur" in the Keyword List?  Do you see "Working..."?

Preferences > Treat '/' As A Keyword Separator checked or unchecked? - they are unchecked on both the laptop and desktop.

I removed the test image.
I changed the keyword to "COLOR SHAPES BLUR" (replacing /'s with space).
I imported the image again and added keywords barkblur and persontest.

Below is the keyword list on the laptop
RackMultipart20190527386071csw-86569d84-ec87-4332-8cdd-92d2a2614274-309871387.png

I then exported the catalog to my thumbdrive. Unplugged it and put it onto my desktop.
I opened the lrcat from the thumbdrive and this is the keyword list

and this is the keyword window still with the ' working' in greyRackMultipart2019052729063f7os-b404fecc-b310-4fc9-b16b-3392cb25663a-1869469934.png

I can reproduce it with Belinda's catalog. It's not barkblur that's going missing, it's the COLOURS SHAPES BLURS parent keyword, even when that's renamed to something simple. Bugged as LRD-4201240
