P: AI Masks Require updating and/or disappear

Community Beginner ,
May 29, 2025 May 29, 2025

Hello,

I recently had a call with Adobe support with no luck. I have found some threads on this but nothing presents a solution and it seems hard to find what the actual issue is.

If I edit a client gallery and use any healing brush tool or AI masking tool, the mask or healing brush/generative AI will get a red dot underneath after going back to the start of the gallery, my AI edits are gone....

I also noticed this happens 100% of the time when I quite and reopen lightroom, I can fix the mask, update ai settings but it just resets each time I open lightroom.

We tested a new catalogue, we tested a bunch of things with no luck.

We really need a fix on this Adobe it is killing workflow, not sure what broke this setting. I can't revert to an old version because I have lots of photos (I do 1 catalogue per year) and can't go back weeks of client work.

Also this catalogue was started at the begining of 2025 so there is no version 13 of this catalogue to revert to and test.

PLEASE HELP ADOBE!

Go to file -> import from another catalog. Then select your old catalog. That will import everything into the new one.

#5 of this worked for me! I export my catalog to my editor and when they sent it back, all the AI filters didn't translate and also they only showed up as smart previews without the needed data. So what I did was export the edited catalog as a new catalog, opened the new catalog and followed #5 above:  In Library, select all photos and do Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings. That will recompute all the AI masks. Success!

This is still an issue. Ridiculous that one of the top photo editing apps is doing this for months. Can't wait for another company to take Adobe's place. Maybe it's time to switch to Capture One...

Definitely a problem. This happens to me every couple of weeks

Do not optimize your catalog. Not as part of a backup (uncheck the option when you make a backup) and not by using the menu. That is the bug that causes this.

Just commenting to say I've been dealing with the same thing the last couple months and my workflow has slowed down to 25% of the speed when I was working on Capture One. Lightroom is so susceptible to file corruption and rendering for masks is painfully slow. This is not sustainable for business. I can't believe Adobe makes as much money as it does yet their software is so far behind.

This issue should be solved with the Lightroom Classic 14.1 update. You will have to update one more time, but then this should 'stick'. If you are referring to other issues, then please do that in a separate thread.

I just had this same problem and it has been driving me crazy for a week.

I had my Catalog Settings to Automatically write changes to XMP.

I thought this would be a good backup to have in case the catalog ever corrupted.

Once I unticked this box it seemed to fix the problem.

I started getting the same thing in Photoshop... It just started today when I tried to use adaptive profiles in the Camera Raw Filter. I was wondering, "What the [heck]".

As Camera Raw does not store this info in a central database, but with each image separately, this cannot be the same problem. The Adaptive Profile does indeed have to be updated regularly depending on what you do next, so this might be as expected.

You've posted in a thread about a bug that was fixed in LR 14.1. If you haven't updated to the latest version (14.2) do the menu command Help > Updates. If you're still experiencing problems, please start a new thread describing in detail the symptoms you're experiencing. Be sure to include the output from the menu command Help > System Info.

Hey community

I've been having a nightmare with AI remove edits constantly needing updating when I scroll in/out of an image in Lightroom Classic.  Having read through some of the posts on this issue I've tried to follow work arounds but I'm getting a little baffled.

I created a new catalogue yesterday and worked on one shoot date with no issues with the AI remove and through the problem was fixed.  However, when I started on a new shoot date today the issues returned - AI remove needing updating constantly.

I've since tried moving the lrcat.data to my desktop but that hasn't solved it either.

I have read somewhere that it could be recommended to go back to v13 and re-upgrade but I have no idea how to do that or if it would work in my case.

If you are able to help, I would MASSIVELY appreciate your time.  I am NOT very technically minded and am muddling through as best I can with this (thanks Google for 'what on earth does this mean') so if you would be able to help in as simple language as possible please I would be eternally grateful!

Thank you so much for your time

Esther

1. Do the menu command Help > System Info and verify you are running LR 14.2 (the latest). If not, do Help > Updates to install 14.2. Bugs with updating AI settings were fixed in a previous version.

2. Do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

3. "I created a new catalogue yesterday and worked on one shoot date with no issues with the AI remove and through the problem was fixed.  However, when I started on a new shoot date today the issues returned - AI remove needing updating constantly."

This rules out any problems that might have been created during the upgrade process from 13 to 14, so no need to try rolling back to 13 and re-upgrading.

This also very likely rules out permissions issues and corruption of the .lrcat-data file.

Hallo zusammen,

LG, Caro

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.
