P: Export Fails with error dialog when Lens Blur is used

Community Beginner ,
Feb 15, 2025 Feb 15, 2025

I discovered this today after a painstaking couple of hours. I am on the latest LRC 14.2. I am not going to bore you guys on how I found this issue but here it is.

Canon R6 MK2. Shooting RAW.

I was working on some wedding photos and was applying adaptive blur Circle to the RAW files. All the RAW files that had this adaptive blur were failing. Good thing I didn't apply this to all images so I was able to go over my steps and figure this out.

I didn't check all the adaptive blur types but this was annoying time lost as I had also done AI enhance on my images which took forever. It doesn't matter if you enhance or not, the issue persists just for the adaptive blur Circle.

I was able to replicate the failure with the DNG provided by @dustinb31538732  and have opened a ticket to investigate.

When there is an update, this thread will be notified.

Greetings all,

A new update for the Adobe Photography products has been released.  The June update contains an update for this issue.

If you do not see the update in your Creative Cloud Application, you can refresh it by hitting [Ctrl/Cmd]+[Alt/Opt]+[ R ].

Note: It may take up to 24 hours for your update to be available in your Creative Cloud app.

Thank you for being so patient.

I am unable to replicate this failure using your instructions.  Moving this post to Discussions.
Mac 15.3
LrC 14.2
Canon Raw File
Apply Adaptive: Blur Background Preset

Export

File exports correctly with Blur intact - no errors

Did you try circle in the adaptive blur. I can replicate this at will. Rather than moving this to a discussion shouldn't you be asking me for more information like logs.

I've tested multiple files on two separate Macs.

I've tested several different Adaptive Blur Background presets including Circle.
I've exported with a couple of different Export settings (you left no details behind on this item)

Recommendations:

Preference file reset

This procedure works for both Lightroom Classic and Lightroom Desktop.

If you are using Lightroom Desktop, it can change your local storage location. Please review this setting after resetting preferences.

Exports correctly every time.

Reset Procedure:

1. Close Lightroom.

2. Hold down [Alt/Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.

3. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.

4. Close Lightroom.

5. Restart Lightroom.

Clean Reinstall:

  • Clean Lightroom Install Procedure
  • Close Lightroom
  • Restart the computer
  • Use the Adobe Creative Cloud App to uninstall Lightroom
  • Restart the computer
  • Install Lightroom via the Creative Cloud App without launching any other programs.
  • Restart the computer
  • Launch Lightroom
  • Wait 5 minutes

If you still experience the problem after these troubleshooting steps, please reply with complete system details and include a file with development settings exported as a DNG (if you can get that to work). If not, any of your raw files would likely do.

Appreciate your testing but I did the reset you suggested and I still have the same issue. I am not going to do a clean reinstall because this is a proper defect that you should look into it a little more. Isn't there a log file I can share with you? There could be some other steps that I did which could be the foundation of the issue. The only thing I know is when I reset the blur it is exporting properly. I am using a few masks and adpative portraits etc before I use the adaptive blur. I also have pasted develop settings on some files. It could be combination of things.

Here are the details.

Mac M1 Macbook Pro Max 64 GB RAM

Mac OS 15.3

Lightroom Classic 14.2

Canon R6 MKII

CR3 file.

Thank you for being persistent, Kamlesh. I have been running into a very similar problem such as yourself, I haven't found the solution yet either other than removing the lens blur to allow for a successful export.

I have been running into this issue for many versions now. It doesn't happen on every image with adaptive blur....but the only way to "fix the issue" is to turn off adaptive blur....export and then acomplish the same thing in Photoshop. It is a huge problem. I have talked with Adobe several times, but no resolution has been provided.

I am encountering the exact same issue as Kamlesh. The issue seems to happen when I have both lens blur and masks on.

I get the following error message :

There was an unknown error. (1)

I have posted it on X now. Hopefully we get some attention unless it's the same person managing that account.

The error message suggests the problem occurred with a DNG created by DxO. Could that be what triggers it? Try a normal raw file to see if you still see the problem. And for others having the same problem: do you use DxO as well to Denoise your images before importing them in Lightroom? Perhaps you could share this particular image via Dropbox or some service like that, so others can try it on their system?

Don't blame the messenger. Your frustration is understandable, but a problem needs to be reproducible to fix it. Suppose I give you a flashlight and ask you to fix it because it doesn't work. You try it and it works fine. What can you fix in that case? All you can do is give it back to me and tell me it works for you. Unfortunately software problems are sometimes like that. It normally means it is caused by something on your system.

Johan, I work in software too and I gave clear steps to reproduce this. I am sure there are log files that are recording these steps and the exceptions or errors related to this. There was no effort to get that. The other indicator is that now there are more people reporting this issue which means the issue exists and the support team needs to investigate further. I can reproduce these steps every single time. If I can follow their guidelines to reset my workspace I am sure someone can follow these simple steps.

The DNG is generated by Lightroom once you do the AI noise reduction. It's a CR3, AI noise reduction, masks and then adaptive blur.

I see you are an expert in the community and your experience would have been different but this was my first post and my experience has been quite cold.

Is anyone on this thread able to provide a DNG file with the edits intact for us to test?

Hello Lightroom Community,

I have used lens blur several times before. Since a few days ago, I am unable to export pics with lens blur - Lightroom gives me an "unknown error". I included a photo for reference. I removed lens blur and was able to export pics with no isuue.

When the photo is loading during the export process, the progress bar moves much faster than during a standard export. I just updated to Lightroom 8.3... Screenshot 2025-04-28 at 10.23.04 PM.png

@Juliana38126393fq2v

I guess firstly check that your Lightroom is up-to-date.
Also, to try and identity the cause of the error, what happens when you try to export from Lightroom Mobile (if 1. You use Lr Mobile and 2. The Lens Blur edits have synced to there).

Is this what you see as well?

So, I found something interesting with this. If I start my edits with "lens blur" and then go on to do everything else....the image will export without any issues. Now, granted, this is only with a couple images I've had issues with...so, it could be a coincidence

Hi @selondon , thank you kindly for your input. Interestingly enough, I tried to export the files with lens blur from Lightroom mobile and it worked. I suppose it's an issue with the macOS version, at least on my end. Both my computer & Lightroom have the latest software updates installed.

I have the exact same problem when I export DNG files to JPEG with Lens Blur applied.
My versions:
Lightroom Classic 14.3.1
macOS 15.4.1

Until Adobe has fixed the issue, I've found a temporary workaround by disabling GPU acceleration:

- Go the Lightroom settings

- Go to the "Performance" Tab

- Under "Use Graphics Processor", select "Custom"

- Turn off all checkboxes for GPU acceleration (or at least the one for "Use GPU for export")

- Close the settings

- Try exporting again

This solved the issue for me.

After exporting, don't forget to switch back the "Use Graphics Processor" to "Auto" 😉

Wenn ich den den Haken bei Objektivunschärfe drin lasse, dann kann ich das Foto nicht exportieren. Es gibt eine Fehlermeldung "Exportvorgang wurde nicht durchgeführt".
