P: Folders filter bug - super slowdown in huge catalog

After any attempt to use the new Folders filter I have to kill Lightroom 😞
My catalog contains about 230 000 photos.

What happens:
1) Write anything into Folder filter
2) Folders are correctly filtered, which is nice nad useful, thanks!
3) I don't do anything - no clicking, so nothing else changes - same displayed photo, same folder chosen, same photo selection.
4) However: The Keywording panel and the Metadata panel both shows "Working..." and this takes very long time (minutes). (Note: It seems that sometimes this happens immediately after filtering, but sometimes after selecting any other photo in the current view)
5) During this time, half of LR is unusable. No context menu, Develop is not working, etc. When quitting LR it displays 'There is a task in progress: "Gathering information".' If I proceed with the quitting, the LR is still running in background, so I will kill it and restart.

It would be great if you could take a look at it, thanks!

Thanks for reporting it.
We are aware of some performance related issues in huge catalogs while using the Folder search.
We are refining it.

Thanks,
Sunil

I am relieved to see this post because I was wondering if I was going mad, with blogs reporting (OK, quoting press release?) performance boosts ... and I am finding the exact opposite. 7.2 has crippled my LR installation. I get the same issues as described. But also, doing almost anything takes an age. Example. I just made a virtual copy then hit 9 to colour it blue. The copy appeared, eventually, although without the curled corner to denote a copy; the colour did not change. Eventually, finally, it did - after I had searched for, found, and started typing here. Ages. Now the corner has curled up too. But something is badly wrong. I can't work like this. iMac 27-inch, Mid 2011, 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, (graphics processor disabled in LR).

Ouch, that is horribly slow. You should be able to avoid it by avoiding the Folder Search field, AFAIK.

how huge is "huge" for this problem?

is it linear (gradually gets worse as catalog gets bigger)?

Is it more related to number of folders or number of images in catalog?

Is there a threshold (no problem up to x files or folders, then big problem)?

Thanks

I have only tested it on my catalog, which is specified in the first post, so aroud 230 000 photos. The rest can be tested, but is obviously time consuming - I have just a single catalog, so I would need to create a set of the new testing ones.

If the developers weren't aware of this bug and need my testing, I would be happy to perform the tests to get it resolved. But since it seems they can reproduce the problem too, these experiments would probably be just a waste of time.

Hi Sunil, In my experience, in a library of some 167K+ images the folder search pegs one core at 100% indefinitely making the application effectively unusable. Worse, even closing the application (this is on Windows), leaves the process running in memory while the one core remains pegged at 100%.

So frustrating to see 7.3.1 release and find the folder search bug is still present. It makes this long awaited feature completely unusable.

We have not fixed this issue in Lightroom 7.3.1.
We are working on the same.

Thanks,
Sunil

Two months. Is there like one developer available for working with this? Adobe's financial stats would suggest there should be enough resources available.

Lightroom Classic CC Version 7.4 was released earlier today and should have a fix for this issue. Give it a try and let us know if you continue to see this problem. Thank you for your patience!

As I noted above, it seems to be fixed.

I even tested it right before the upgrade ( = pain and suffering) and then 10 minutes later after the upgrade ( = flawless). So good job, thanks! 🙂
